I'm ten days away from ordering my new iMac, and have bought a few things in anticipation. I bought a Lacie d2 320GB External Hard Drive, I'm about to buy 4GB of third-party RAM, and today I ordered a copy of VMWare Fusion - which I quickly cancelled. From what I can tell, VMWare doesn't guarantee that Fusion will work with Leopard, and I don't want to order it if (1) it doesn't work effectively, and (2) if VMWare is going to charge me additional for a release that is supported on Leopard.

So am I not going to be able to move forward until an official release from VMWare? Or am I worrying too much?

Hi there. I'm one of the developers of VMware Fusion for Mac—found your post via Google.

The upcoming VMware Fusion 1.1, a free upgrade from 1.0, works great with Leopard; we run it daily on the latest seeds that Apple made available. 1.1 is available for free beta download now at http://www.vmware.com/beta/fusion/ .

Apple chose not to make the final build of Leopard available to Apple Developer Connection subscribers, so of course, it's possible something was broken after the last developers' seed was shipped. To our knowledge, however, VMware Fusion 1.1 will work great with Leopard when it's released.

Unfortunately I'm worried that quite a few apps won't work due to Apple not releasing the GM to devs yet...

Just out of interest, what do you recommend for Leopard users, 1.0 or the 1.1 beta? Or, to put it another way, are the potential issues with the beta more or less severe than the incompatibilities with Leopard?

At least on Tiger, the beta has been great :)

I installed the non-beta VM Fusion last night with the trial key and it was amazing. I've been using parallels for over a year and while it works, it's not very efficent. VM Ware was incredibly fast, and I'll be changing over as soon as I get leopard stable.

In the same light...

So glad you asked this question! Rather than create a dupe thread for a similar question, let me add my related question.

I just started the transition from windows to my first Mac with the iMac just two weeks ago. I love it, but I still want to use my MS Office 2007 and windows AOL (due to my saved e-mails) -- so I bought VMWare Fusion from what I read as greater stability than Parallels.

I also know that I'll want to be able to start bootcamp-style for maximum game options in the future. Given this, I assumed I'd want to create a bootcamp partition first and then install VMWare Fusion to use it. Any limitations this makes? Is a "shared folder" for between the operating systems unnecessary if you use a pure "Fusion" virtual machine instead?

I'm trying to figure out the right thing to do. Do I wait for Leopard and use its Bootcamp to make a windows partition then install VMWare Fusion? If I don't need the gaming option for a while, could I use Fusion now and then add a bootcamp partition in the future with the same copy of windows? I instinctively doubt it. Or is there another option with Fusion I could do today to get both worlds--work app compatibility and pure booting into windows for games?

Any opinions/experiences really appreciated. I don't want to misstep and regret!

I'm also curious about this. Basically, does it make sense to use Fusion as a parallels alternative and bootcamp for gaming? You only need 1 version of XP for Fusion and Bootcamp right? Do ppl have this setup?

I have had no issues at all with Fusion 1.0 under Leopard. Admittedly I haven't had time to test it much, but everything seems to work (bridged networking, etc).
