I have my trusty old dell tower running Centos as a headless server and I VNC into it using screen sharing on mountain lion.

All of this works a treat apart from the fact that I have lost the bottom of the Centos desktop in the screen sharing window. I have tried messing with the scaling options in screen sharing and also trying to resize the window but all to no avail.

Anybody any ideas? or is there a better app to use for this?

Thanks in anticipation.

RE: Scree sharing preferences...

Hi,

Do you have "Show full size" or "Scale to fit" preference turned on?

Yes I have messed about with every permutation. It seems awfully slow as well and the mouse pointer sometimes lags.

Thinking of trying some other vnc client to be honest, there must be some reason why there are so many 3rd party ones out there!

It's been over five years since I've done it (remote Linux on local Mac) although I I've done almost every other Mac/Linux/Windows combination recently.

Here's a thought -- VNC is really pretty slow because it basically transmits screen changes to the client. However you do have an X11 Server on the Mac so you should be able to just run ssh to the Linux box from a terminal window and then display any X11 applications (basically anything with a GUI) locally. It would be much faster. Five years ago I was doing this to run CAD programs on a system 3,000 miles away! I don't remember how I set it up but I'm sure a quick Google search would show how.
