Works for me

It works for me about the same as my old verizon phone's voice dialer did. It doesn't ALWAYS get the name right but if I speak clearly and naturally it gets it ALMOST all of the time.

Wish that I could launch it by holding down a physical button (e.g., volume button) or something, instead of launching from the home screen. Even with SpeechCloud I still need to "slide to unlock" then tap an icon to launch SpeechCloud.

Works well -- if you follow the instructions

SpeechCloud works but you need to use it correctly: press and HOLD DOWN the button. WAIT UNTIL THE WORDS "Speak Now" APPEAR (usually around one second), then SAY THE WORD "CALL" followed by the contact you want to call. THEN release the button.

This sounds complicated but it really isn't.

Drawbacks: you still need to unlock the phone before you start it, and you still have to press one button to choose home/work/mobile/whatever.

There is another voice dialer for the iPhone -- it's called Makoyana or something like that. It requires you to train your iPhone by reading each contact out loud several times. It also costs money, and SpeechCloud is free.

I used it exactly per the instructions, and it's still crap. Takes way too many steps and takes too long to be of any real use. Oh, and out of twelve different names "called," it got exactly zero correct (without even an option to look at alternates). I know my pronunciation is fine, I've been in broadcasting, so clarity is not an issue.

If it had useful and accurate speech recognition, was incorporated into the Phone app, and provided alternates if it were under, say, 80% certainty, then I might be willing to give it another go.

Your mileage may vary -- widely!

Sounds like you're doing the same thing as me - strange that our results are so different.

I did notice that if I am connected via EDGE, then it is v-e-r-y s-l-o-w to look up a number (like, ten seconds slow). If you're connected via Wi-Fi, then it is very snappy. Can't comment on 3G performance since I have a first generation phone.

Anyway, it works great for me, and I've parked it in my "dock" at the bottom of my phone in place of the regular "phone" icon that usually goes there.

VoiceThis dialer update 1.1 available on the App Store

Has anyone tried the VoiceThis Dialer? Does it work well and is it worth the $10?

The new version 1.1 has been posted as of 9/5, you might want to give it a try. Recognition accuracy is on average 95%. Its $10, but you also receive unlimited free updates as performance will continue to be optimized with each new version. If you are having difficulties VoiceThis customer service will go above and beyond to provide you with the service you need. Should you ever feel completely unsatisfied VoiceThis will more than likely provide you a refund.
