Is it possible to download audio files that are sent to me in Messenger in MacOSX?

Well you can certainly rt click,(cntrl+click) 'copy' and then paste somewhere else to save if that helps.

Have you actually done this? It’s not working for me :(

Edited to add: are you asking about the Messages app or some other messaging app?

I've done it. When you right click on a voice message (created via Dictation), do you see this menu? From there you can copy it and paste it wherever you'd like to save it. It saves as a .caf file.

Since Messenger is an MacOSX application, I have a feeling that Facebook isn’t really what matters here ;-)

Like any third-party app, it's the developer that supports it. Maybe it's worth a shot to contact FB support.

I searched for the following keywords using DuckDuckGo:
how to download FB messenger audio files

Several of the top results said this, or something quite similar:
To download audio from Facebook Messenger, you need to go to m.facebook.com and click on the "Messenger" icon. Next, navigate to the audio, click on the three dots, and click on "Download" to download it.

They also generally agreed that you can't do this in the Messenger app.

I have not verified any of this, since I don't use FB.

You could also check here, to see if there are any tips:

That was the top hit in a search with the keywords:
fascebook messenger support
