I'm about to go to Europe (from US). I just read this on another forum after thinking I had everything straight in my head

"just a reminder for anyone traveling internationally: If your phone ever registers on an international carrier network
, even if you turn it off thereafter, and someone calls and leaves you a voicemail, whether or not the phone is on or not, you will still be charged for that person leaving you a voicemail. Go to http://wireless.att.com/international and read all the details before using your phone internationally, I highly recommend it."

This seems to contradict this At&t page here that says

"When your device is on:

* Calls that you do not answer that are routed to the AT&T voicemail system will be charged as an international roaming incoming call to your device.
* In addition, the foreign carrier's routing of that call to the AT&T voicemail system may generate an outgoing call charge from your device's location to the U.S.
* These charges apply even if the caller disconnects from the voicemail system without leaving a message.

If your device is turned off or in flight mode and the wireless network is off:

* When someone tries to call you, the call will go directly to your personal voicemail greeting.
* Since the network does not try to deliver the call to you in a foreign country, there are no international roaming charges.
"

So is the person on the other forum talking out of their ass??!!?? I was intending to mostly keep my phone in airplane mode apart from maybe the odd SMS message. My worry is if I ever switch airplane mode off then i'd start getting charges for voice mails even if my phone is off or in airplane mode.

Anyone who's been abroad know?

Mark.

OK. Phew.. called At&t that confirmed the website.

If the phone is off or in airplane mode, even if its been on outside of the U.S. for any period I WILL NOT get charged for the voicemail!!!

God I hate wrong information !!!

Please repost to this thread when you get back and see your AT&T bill.

i just got back from europe a couple weeks ago.
if you leave your phone off or in airplane mode you do not get charged.
and if someone does call when its on your better off answering it rather than letting it go to voicemail. its cheaper
