Hi. I'm new to the forums, and to macs in general. The Name's Andy. I have used OpenBSD and linux for quite some time, but am taking online classes now and needed either windows or mac.... I only had one choice :)

Anyhow, this is a pretty simple question. I was messing around with voice recognition (which surprised me at how well it worked) and was making things speakable. All of them seemed to work till I got to my "X11" application. I can't figure out what it's expecting me to say?

I tried "ex eleven" and "ex one one" and don't know what else to try. Any ideas?

Thanks

Andy

ps When I added it to the list, the computer voice pronounced it "ex one one."

X11 is a window environment for non-aqua applications. It shows up when you want to run Wine or OpenOffice and any number of things.

Did you even read the question? I come from a *NIX background, so I know what X11 is. That's why I installed it.

I want to know what I have to say to the voice recognizer to make it open it after I made it speakable.

After setting it up and calibrating the microphone and a couple of trys, "ex one one" works here. (Dual G5 2GHz PPC).

Thanks, Bob. I still can't get it to work for me though, I guess my voice is messed up or somethng :p

Just for information, mine worked only about 4-5 times out of 8-9 tries. My old microphone is not the best in quality (I haven't used it in years and the little sponge in front of the condenser mic element is gone) and I have a bit of an accent. :p

I think you can drop an alias into the "Speakable Items" folder in the Library (usually want to use the root Library for this, but I guess it probably could be done in the Home Library too), which you will likely have to create (my computer doesn't have one present). Name it whatever you want and it should open up just fine. My recommendation would be "ex eleven", since that's the most natural way to say it, and just make sure there's no extension visible (if it's an alias, it shouldn't have one anyways).

EDIT: Actually, it appears it needs to be an AppleScript, not an alias to the item (I'm thinking back to my OS 9 experimentation with Speakable Items).

That's a good idea Mal. I'm planning on learning applescript anyway, so I guess making some items for the speech recognition software would be a good way to get my feet wet.... It seems like an interesting language.
