Voice via web and file transfer

I am looking for an app that allows me to transfer files between two uses (example: MAC-PC) since MSN file transfer doesnt work and Yahoo doesnt allow trasfering big files. havent had great luck with icq either.

Also, I am looking for an app that allows me to use voice via the web....again Yahoo and MSN dont support it on MAC.

any recommendations?
 
If you are just using a pc to download you could turn on websharing (apache) and do it that way.

EDIT: New idea, you could just create your own ftp server!
 
Why not just turn on file sharing (not web sharing) and stick the files in your 'Public' folder? It uses FTP so you ought to be able to connect from your PC to your mac user a normal FTP client like cuteftp or ws_ftp.

thanks a lot guys for your help, my question is, if i have my websharing on, how can a user from outside my network access ftp if i dont have a fixed ip? another thing, do i put my files in my shared folder?

Your Sites folder is in your "home" directory (/users/yourusername/Sites)

You will want to either have a HTML page linking to file or files; or else give the exact names of the files to use an absolute path.

If you don't have a fixed IP address, this all becomes tricky. You need to make sure the other person has your current IP address, and if your network connection drops, or your computer restarts, you'll need to give the new one to them.

You can sign up with these services and you are done. They give you a fixed domain and detects what your current IP is via a client software you install on your machine.

(*These are the sites recommended by David Pogue in his Missing Manual book)

Keep in mind that if you are behind a bloadband router or whatever router, the deal is not as simple as this. You need to configure port setting (which I'm still trying to figure out...)

I tried that, and it wont letanyone connect, it is crashing one of my friends IE everytime she tried connecting.Another problem with another friend says u can not connect. i tried ftp://255.255.255.255/~myusername and i tried it using http:// and I tried it ftp://255.255.255.255/~user/myusername

i even created an account for one of my friends in the sytem preferences, and it didnt work. Whats funny is that when I tried in on my web browser it works, and i can connect. I guess its because i am connecting to my own pc....i dont know.

Another question I have is how can I limit to what files can be shown for each user and what access each one of them has for each folder.

This ip you are trying to connect to, does it start with 10.XXX.XXX.XXX or 168.XXX.XXX.XXX?

not it does not. a friend just tried logging in and it says youdo not have permission even though i gave him my username and password.

Try modifying the permissions of the Sites folder... Click on "sites" and go to "get info" in the file menu, then see what the permissions are. It's possible they're set to give no one read access besides yourself, which could be why you can access it (you're logged in as machine administrator). This hung me up once, it surprised me that enabling web sharing didn't do this...
