I've heard from the dev today that he is planning to release an update to VoiPover3G this week. He is going to charge for it "but it will be cheap". By this I take it to mean 1 or possibly 2 dollars (at a guess). The dev also mentioned that he is designing a configuration interface for it, so presumably no more editing of the .plist.

There is a rumour that the dev of TrickerThreeG, which was released after VoIPover3G, actually stole most of the code for TrickerThreeG from VoIPover3G. This may be the reason why TrickerThreeG has disappeared from Cydia and it could be that you may never see an update to TrickerThree3. Of course, with an update to VoIPover3G imminent, you won't need it anyway.

Great news! The sooner the update hits cydia the better, For me skypes useless without it.

Thats great news, will it include support for SlingPlayer?

As far as I'm aware, it will have a graphical config tool which will include the ability to choose which apps utilise VoIPover3G. I don't know which apps will be available for use with VoIPover3G but as Skype and SlingPlayer are two of the most used apps with VoIpover3G, I would be amazed if it didn't work for them just as well if not better than on previous iPhone models. In other words, I can't say with 100% certainty that it will work with SlingPlayer but I'm 99.9% sure it will.

I know that Saurik (Cydia and MobileSubratrate dev) has added some additional code to the last MobileSubstrate update specifically for the VoiPover3G dev. So if you haven't updated your MobileSubstrate in the last week you will probably need to in order to use the new VoIPover3G app.

This is consistent with my understanding after a couple of Twitter exchanges with Crash-X. Very good news!

If I download it now, will the update be free, or will the update cost money no matter what I do?

As I said in the original post, the dev is going to charge for the update. Whether you've installed a free previous version or not is irrelevant. As I also said in the OP, it is likely to only cost buck or so. A small price to pay for the effort and expertise which goes into creating it and the invaluable functionality it provides for many of us.

Agreed, I think it is more than fair to charge a nominal fee, not everything in life can be free, supporting the authors of these utilities not only compensates them for their time, but also ensures they will be interested in maintaining the software for future hardware revisions.

We should also bare in mind that the dev obviously already owns a 2G or 3G iPhone and presumably has had to go out and get a 3Gs so he can test and debug the update. Maybe he was planning on upgrading to a 3Gs anyway but one way or another, it's still an expense in addition to his time and effort.

Agreed. Paying for 3G compatibility is definitely something that makes my phone more functional and I will be happy to pay for it. Screw ATT!

I just hope that it can trick Youtube into thinking it's on Wifi.. So I don't have to resort to two YouTube apps (MxTube and Default).. I'd rather just use the official youTube app, it's way more comprehensive and it feels like you're on the actual YouTube site.. but the WiFi quality is wayyyy better.. PLEASE trick YouTube!!!

Please elaborate on what you feel the differences are. I hid YouTube and just use MxTube because it allows for downloads.

I don't care about downloading/saving YouTube movies.. I like the official YouTube app better.. there's comments, related videos, etc. It's almost a full YouTube experience.. MxTube doesn't give that experience. Plus the fact you have to click about 3-4 times to start watching a high quality version of a video on MxTube.. by tricking the official YouTube app, the moment you just select a video, it would start playing in high quality mode whereas in MxTube, you have to click on a video, then it asked if you wanna download or stream, if you select stream, it defaults to low-quality dreaming, you have to rather click on download, THEN you can select Stream in High quality. It's annoying.

Looks like Crash-x is getting very close and it definitely supports Slingplayer. I'm getting excited again!!

Where did you hear this?

Anyway, I can't wait to be able to use Skype again! That will be the icing on the 3GS cake. :D

My guess (IE. Not confirmed fact!) is that VoIPover3G will probably work with any app currently limited to WiFi access only. It's my guess that the additional functions Saurik created in the last MobileSubstrate update can be called by the VoIPover3G dev to identify the apps which attempt to access WiFi only. It could then be a process of comparing these apps against the list of apps selected by the user to use VoIPover3G and if there is a match and no WiFi access to then route those apps through 3G. Again, there may be functions to aid this in MobileSubstrate. If this is the method used by the dev then it's logical to believe that the dev only has to create one block of code for all apps, rather than having to provide this functionality on an individual app by app basis.

If my guess is correct or at least close to the mark, in theory every app which is WiFi only should be available for selection to route through the 3G network in the absence of WiFi. If my guess is way off the mark and he has to write individual code for each app, it would be unreasonable to expect the dev to be able to identify and write the code for every single app out there in this first release, although the most common apps would likely be supported.

Bare in mind I have some experience of computer progamming but I'm not an iPhone dev or expert. Beyond the dev telling me he plans on releasing it this week, it will be cheap and there will be a config utility, I don't have any insider information beyond a few public snippets of info which I've added all together and come up with my theory above.

BTW, I believe the updated VoIPover3G app will be called "Unrestrictor"!

I'd be fine if the Dev wants to make a global switch that fakes Wifi connectivity for ALL apps on the device. I can't really think of an app that would really need Wifi performance when 3g is almost nearly as fast these days.

No, there will definitely be a configuration front end which will let you choose which apps to enable for use over threeG. I'm fairly certain that the apps you enable will only be routed over threeG in the absence of a WiFi connection. Pragramming it this way would presumably be a little more tricky but would mean that users would only eat into their 3G data allowance when absolutely necessary.

The last report I saw from the dev indicated that beta testing was complete and therefore it will probably be available on Cydia literally anytime now.
