There is a new app available in Cydia called VoIPover3G that tricks apps into thinking that they are on wifi when on 3g/Edge/GPRS. This should be good for Fring. No more installing hacked versions of Fring to get SIP calls over 3G.

I just downloaded it and will post a review later.
 
It seems to work as advertised. I haven't been able to do extensive testing because Fring and VOIP Stunt aren't playing too nice at the moment.

I was waiting for such an App. It works as mentioned. I tested Fring on Edge and it was OK.

These are the issues:

1. Sound is Robitic, but thats with firmware 2.1 so can't do anything about it. known issue.
2. No Bluetooth compatibility
3. Lag as the network packets gets routed through Fring Servers.
 
i tried this program out and it did not work for the iTunes music store. Also, it drained my battery incredibly fast.

Does it work with the Youtube app? That's the application I'm really interested in...so I that I can watch full-quality Youtube video over 3G instead of the crappy EDGE versions.

I know it's possible and that the speed is good enough on 3G because watching Youtube videos through AOL Truveo on the iPhone gives me the full-quality versions of the videos. :) So it's just a dumb restriction on the Youtube app's part.

...well, okay, maybe not completely dumb. From the looks of things (especially the new version of Pandora, which allows you to listen to the stereo hi-def tracks even on EDGE if you switch the option on), apps probably cannot differentiate between "EDGE" and "3G"...it's just either "cellular" or "WiFi" for them, so to be safe, they all generally assume "cellular" is EDGE. Somebody who has programmed for the iPhone can probably confirm that the APIs don't give you finer granularity than that.

installed it, tried it, did't work. reinstalled, rebooted, tried everything and it doesn't work.

what gives?
 
After installing this and using it for a full day (on a 2G), it did work with fring. The only problem is on Edge the sound quality is horrible... maybe 3G users will be better.

Also, had to uninstall because my wifi kept disconnecting every minute!
 
how does this plist thing work? I've got voip working fine. But I'd like safari to think it was over wifi so that I can watch bbc iplayer over 3g. Which I know is possible cause I can watch it on my laptop via pdanet so the bbc haven't blocked ip range.

Any ideas how i'd let safari think it was on wifi?

There are a lot of possible uses for that, but for me the main use is being able to use VoIP programs like Fring over 3G. You can configure what apps get tricked by adding the app’s bundle identifier to “/Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plist”. Currently, the default is to trick only appstore and fring. If you remove or rename the VoIPover3G.plist ALL applications will be tricked. This is not recommended though, because for a lot of apps its makes sense to know whether they are on wifi or 3G.

What I take from this is that you can edit the Plist and add application names that you wanted to be "tricked" into thinking they are on wifi, or remove the Plist altogether and every app will think it is on wifi.

so has anyone tried this? i really would like to use youtube and itunes store over 3g
