I have been using Volta for years on end between my 2013 15" MBP, 2018 15" and now my 16". With the i9 in my 16", I have been limiting the wattage to around 20W for daily usage to prevent spikes in temps and to help out with the battery life.

Last night, I updated to Big Sur and now the functionality of Volta no longer works. It seems like all the options are disabled as if SIP has been reenabled which I ensured it wasn't.

Anyone having this kind of issue?

it's really-old software, isn't it? i know of it, never used it.

you could try rebooting into recovery, disabling SIP again (to be sure), then re-installing volta. or contact the developer for support. what OS did you update from? and why are you running it? your mac was designed to work as it is, and it's expected to get warm when pushed. anyway, did you check to make sure it's supported in big sur?

just not sure what you're accomplishing, tho, by reducing the wattage...

EDIT: some discussion here, with a possible fix (for catalina, anyway): volta

Well I’ve reinstalled Volta and reenabled and disabled SIP. Yes it’s old software but what in Big Sur would break compatibility?

Reducing wattage will reduce power consumption and it also keeps my temps from getting too high, that’s why I like using it. The i9 gets pretty toasty and will sustain a 65W load if I don’t have a power limit and run around 85-90C. Setting it to 20W it barely will see 60C.

I know I can disable turbo boost by other methods but Volta was a very easy to use software on the fly.

what OS did you migrate from? is volta a 64-bit app? anyway, probably good to check with the developer...

In that title I stated Catalina to Big Sur so it working in Catalina should be working in Big Sur.

Developer pretty much is non existent on this app now.

ha, yes, you did. still, working in catalina doesn't guarantee working in big sur... there are always changes in a new OS. anyway, search the web, others may have a workaround... or perhaps there's a big sur- compatible app for this functionality. anyone know of one?

I think voltageshift would be the only way to do the power limiting but others with Haswell and Broadwell based CPUs are still undervolting this way. It’s not practical for me to use terminal to limit wattage when Volta was doing it on the fly.

I’m probably just going to downgrade to Catalina tonight as there are a few things that I don’t like in Big Sur so it’s not too big of a deal.

Only if I could get Mojave on my 16” since it play some 32 bit games that I now have to use bootcamp for.

I used to use Voila, but I think they basically moved to replace it moving forward with Capto which I have been using from Sierra through Catalina. Looking at this comparison (link below) I do not see that Big Sur is supported by either. Of all the many apps I have the Capto installer was the only one that just does not work out of the box with Catalina. Global Delight just is not recognized by the OS as a valid developer it seems. I eventually got it to install by disabling SIP, etc. I use it everyday and it works great, but I am concerned as to why it does not install like everything else.

Thanks for the recommendation. Volta’s developer hasn’t responded to an email I sent out a month and a half ago along with one recently so I’m not sure it’s even going to be updated.

Never heard or tried Capto but I did end up reverting back to Catalina just because I didn’t like the appearance and changes of Big Sur.

I have several apps working in Catalina that are not updated for Big Sur. I have been running Big Sur on my 2015 Mackbook Pro and I prefer Catalina. The only compelling reason that I wanted to try Big Sur was in the distant hope that the GPU drivers for my w5700x card might have been updated, but it is not worth the loss of productivity in dead apps I currently use daily.

Of course, now Photoshop does not fully support Catalina with Open CL - so everything is normal with Apple, nothing ever works 100%.

I upgraded from a 2018 6 core 15” to a 8 core 16” and I was sticking with Mojave due to 32-bit support. I also had another instance of High Sierra so I could use an EGPU with an NVIDIA card.

I completely feel you that you can’t ever have 100%.

so, developers don't have to keep up on the OS, and it's apple's job to hold back development... to keep older apps working? hmmm....
