Sometimes my volume up and down buttons don't work anymore but i can still change the volume using the icon at the top. but when this happens, my programs start to lag and i quit them.. but after that, they do not reopen. when i try restarting from the apple icon, it won't let me, it does nothing. so i am forced to restart by holding down the on/off button. after i restart, then everything is fine. can someone tell me how to fix this? and is it bad foro me to restart my computer incorrectly? thanx in advance.

What computer do you have?

About the freezing - that's not a good thing.

It's okay to shut down using the physical power button, but don't do it every day.

You can run an Apple Hardware Test by putting in the Install CD 1 in your computer, restarting it and holding down D as it starts up. (Sometime's it's a different button to press - it'll say on the CD.)

What does it tell you?

As a matter of habit, I always have Activity Monitor running in the background, and the process list sorted by CPU usage. The next time your Mac slows like this, switch to AM and see if one process is hogging the CPU - this may give an indication where the problem lies.

You might also check in the Console to see if there are any errors/assertions appearing.
