I am unable to change the volume from any external device (keyboard, logitech mouse) I can only change it in the menubar at the top right or in system preferences. Why is this? I used to be able to change it with my keyboard and mouse, what do you think has changed? I didn't change anything that I am aware of. This is very annoying. Any help is appreciated in advance.

edit: im running 10.4.6 and have tried multiple keyboards and am using logitec mx1000

Have you checked your Mouse and Keyboards preference? Might be that that the option for holding the function key has been turned on. This is a bit of a longshot, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.
