I just installed a new audio interface and now, the volume controls on the Mac keyboard are locked and I can only adjust the volume using the hardware controller on the audio interface? Is this normal? Is there a workaround as I really like just being able to raise/lower/mute using the keyboard

Thank you

It depends on the audio interface. Sounds like you got one that doesn't implement the onboard audio controls.

I've had three USB audio devices (Focusrite, M-Track & Presonus) and they all worked like yours. I have a USB headset that responds to system controls and that's the only device I've ever had that does.

I got fed up with the little knob on my Presonus so I got a Mackie Big Knob (passive version).

Ahhhh I will look into that - does the Mackie add any color to the sound? I would assume not if it is passive

Anything added to the chain will do something. It's probably the kind of device a top-of-the-line studio wouldn't add. Reviews are generally very good and the only spectral comparison I've seen shows very little difference.
