I am volunteering for a group to improve their website. It is changing to use Wordpress. Looking for suggestions on best free app recommendations for MacBook (I have a 14" M3 pro) or maybe iPad (I have an Apple pencil). I guess it's just case of things like anime images and creating backgrounds as opposed to real graphic art creation. I have ProCreate on my iPad but not chosen for Mac yet. Maybe prepared to pay small amount one off for an app but not a subscription. Thanks.

You need to pick a lane. Pixelmator has a short learning cycle and costs, like most others, such as Affinity, that are quick and easy to get into. Free, like Gimp, has a long learning cycle; you won't get both free and quick actions easily.

"Free" tends to be more expensive in the long run. GIMP is free, but it has a horrible interface and is woefully short on features. Quite frankly, I found it to be more difficult to use than Affinity Photo, Pixelmator and even Photoshop.

I would go with Affinity Design and Affinity Photo for vector and photo editing. Cheap for what you are getting. While there will be some learning involved, you are the one that benefits from that as your knowledge is increased and your abilities are increased. Cheap and easy usually end up with cheap and easy looking content.
