So in iOS, does the app know what mode and/or volume level the phone is at? And can change those settings somehow?

I think crowdsourcing is a bad idea. You have to let people decide whether they want it or not themselves. Remember that a movie theater can be at a mall, a classroom can be on a huge campus, etc.
