I have a nifty PB 12"/10.2.4 with 320mb ram devoted to VPC. I did the XP Pro optimization per Connectix and it is better, but still not acceptable. when I run my real estate programs on a mid-range Duron based PC, it is nice and snappy. I really don't want to go back, I love OS X, any help would be appreciated.

Adding more ram would't hurt, but, it is not going to be snappy, it's going to be slow and sluggish no matter what you do. Your just going to have to deal with that fact.

I question when people say VPC is useable, as I think it is not useable at all. It's sluggishness is too much for me, and I have allocated 512 MB of RAM for it. Upping the RAM will make it better, but better is a relative term. :(

Good Luck.

yes, use Remote Desktop with a $300 PC

Put your PC on a remote place, connect via Remote Desktop Connection, and it works out to be a better solution. Of course, u need win2000 server or XP Pro to use M$'s RDC, but it works. I have an old gateway PII 333 Mhz, and connect via airport network. Its faster than running VPC on a 550 Mhz TiBook with 512 Ram. The full screen mode is a great feature as well..

Have you gone into the WinXP visual effects settings? I have a 1.6 GHz P4 at work right now and it seemed sluggish with WinXP until I killed the sliding and fading effects.

I find that Win98SE on my dual 800 is better than adequate but not great. I'm using 10.2.4 with VPC 5.0.4 and I should upgrade to VPC 6.x but I'm not in a hurry unless MS starts to tamper with it.

Hi JayKK, Thanks for the idea re: remote desktop connection. I would really be appreciative if you could elaborate a bit more. Is your idea to see the pc through a window on the mac? I'm running 10.2.4 on a 12" PB/640. I've got a 1800 XP running XP Pro for a pc.

Thanks in advance, I have asked around and no one quite knows how to do this, especially me.

Be sure to install Windows XP on a VirtualPC hard disk image of at least 5 GB. The default 512MB is too small for swapfile to have space to move around, and thus causes a lot more disk access, and causes more of a slowdown. Secondly, upgrade to VirtualPC 6.1, it is faster than 6.0.
