I was checking out the price for VPC and noted that you can buy VPC and XP each as separate pieces. Didn't know that! Thought it was all one piece.

Anyone know if it is better to buy it all as one. VPC 6.1 w XP is $ 219. vpc 6.1 alone is $ 129. I should be able to get XP cheaper than $ 90 through the school.

Is it tougher to install as 2 separate software pieces, or is that how it comes anyway???

I wouldn't reccommend XP. 2000 is a better way to go. However, buying the 2 together is only beneficial if you aren't computer literate. If you can install a Windows OS and follow instructions, you should be able to install them. I've never done it but I've heard the process was easy.

It's fairly easy to install any version of Windows on VPC. Even if you buy VPC with XP you'd still have to install it after loading up VPC.

I agree with what others have said. Run the minimum version of Windows that you require.. e.g 2000. Windows 95 flies in VPC under OS 9.

Got a fast Mac? i.e. > 700 Mhz G4... Go for Win 2K on VPC 6.
Slower? install Win 98 SE on it.

edit: fsck XP! I got a Dual 1.25 Ghz G4, w/ 1 GB RAM >>> VPC 6.1 Win XP runs really slow on it. Win 2K is allright.... for what it's worth

Had a thought. Since I have an iPaq, can I use VPC with Win 2000 to sync up with my mac. I would think so, but I guess the problem is what is it going to sync with. All my info is in iMail, iCal, Entourage, etc. Am I correct?? Or is there a way to link up the Mac and Win items?

Better to use Missing Sync for PocketPC or Pocket Mac to sync.

Win2000 will perform quite a bit faster (almost 2x) than win98...I would go with that.

To sync a pocket pc with a mac you need a program like pocketmac. you can export and import stuff to windows but its not gonna be real time or truely synced. Your best bet is to try a mac native app or just move over to palm, i just got a origonal tungsten T, it rocks! :)

Actually, the backlight on my 2 yr old iPaq just went the other day. So I thought about either a Palm Zire 71 or a Tungsten T. I'd love to have something that just fits with the Mac OSX.

No question, Windows 2000 Professional is the best OS you can get for VirtualPC or for a PC for that matter. It's easy to use (for Windows) stable (for Windows) and aesthetically pleasing (for... you guessed it: Windows).

If you go that route, get the bundle. You'll save about $80 on the OS over if you bought it seperately.

And yes, you do have to instll Windows seperately from VPC.
