VPN on demand on Iphone

I have set up a new email account, which I have to access through VPN. My VPN turns itself off frequently- meaning I have to turn it back on before I can access this email account.

Is there a way to either leave VPN on constantly, or to have it as an on-demand feature?

Also, does VPN affect battery life significantly?
