Since the last mac os update on my mac mini m1 (16gb) i have a process named "VTDecoderXPCService" that uses a lot of memory (between 8-15gb). When i close the process, it always comes back a few hours later. This is the first time ive seen it since i bought my mac mini m1 2 years ago.
Ive tried google, but most peopel say it has to do with messages and that i should close the app, but in my case, it does not seem to be connected to messages app.

i have not installed any new apps either, so i have no idea why this is happening right now.

Anyone knows how i can get rid of this? its been going on for weeks now!

I don't have it. Is it visible in Activity Monitor?

Yeah it is visible in activity monitor.
The question is: who or what started it.
Go in Terminal and type:
ps -ef

Lots of output; you may direct it to a text file: ps -ef >/tmp/Text.txt Open it by any editor, or print it.
Find the process line by its name; the first number on the line is its PID number,
the second number is its starter's PID (PPID).
Find the line with this PPID number as first number: that's the 'parent' process.
And so on.
Success.

This is the only line that was matched with the process when searching via terminal:

The PID and PPID is 5838 and 1. What do i do with this info, to see what service is using it? :)

VTDecoderXPCService is a component of the VideoToolbox frameworks, it decoders video in a separate process. So every app out there that uses the hardware decoders (or even the software ones) will use it.

Do you have something that plays video running? Or maybe it doesn't like one specific video.

i have a plex server (only direct play) running on my mac mini, but plex been running for like 2 years without any problems, this decoder starting to eat RAM just 2-3 weeks ago.

No other video services running on the mac

These days everything will play a video or two. Websites for example, or QuickLook when it generates the file previews.

I played several video's to test, *.mp4 and *.webm
using the VLC player.
I saw nothing bigger than 1Gb appear in the Activity Monitor.
Can you try VLC to play some of your's? VLC is free from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/#download
