MP 1,1-5,1 W5500 on Mac 5,1

Ok so looking for a gpu for cMP 5,1.

Will be running at least Catalina or big Sur with opencore and was wondering if a Radeon pro w5500 would work and would it support metal 2 on cMP 5,1.

was looking at Rx 500 series but would prefer not to get a second hand card if possible

It's a video card that is made with a NAVI 14 GPU, exactly like RX 5500 and it's not a perfectly supported GPU with macOS, there are reports of some RX 5500 working and others not working.

It's a macOS GPU family 2.

Btw, there is no support at all before Catalina. You won't have a display working with Mojave.

Also believe need to be on 10.15.7 and earlier versions are not supported.

The eGPU guidance from Sonnet states the 5500 and 5600 cards also may misidentify in macOS. Do not believe there is a comprehensive list of specifically which cards, but those that misidentify are likely the ones with issues.

Yep, most related problems are related to the Navi 14. It’s very difficult to recommended one.

The AMD Radeon RX 580 Pulse card is a surprisingly strong card with excellent drivers. Compared to the half baked 5500, even a used 580 would be a significant better choice. 580 all the way, tsialix is on the spot with his assessment.

If you're looking at the second hand market, do not skip over some PC builds that bundle a true RX 580 in the case. Prices of standalone GPUs are skyrocketing with global chip shortage. Even 5+ year old models are selling at a premium.
