Just wondering if there would be a problem running a W5590 in the single processor tray model (quad core) of the 2009 mac pro.

I know the W5590 is meant for dual processors, but would there be a problem running it as a single processor? I don't think there should be, but i just wanted to confirm before trying it...

I haven't tried it, but believe it would most certainly work. On the other hand, you could sell it, buy a W3690 and pocket some cash...
My bad... I read 5690, not 5590.

from what i've seen w3690's are selling for much more. Understandable since they're 6-core.

even the 4-core w3590s seem to be selling for at or more than the w5590s...

hence my question. i also don't see why a w5590 wouldn't work, but i'd feel more at ease if i could get confirmation there wouldn't be a problem.

The 5590s support up to two QPI links where the 3690s and any W35xx or W36xx are made for single socket boards. I know W3xxx won't work in dual socket motherboards, but I'm not sure of the reverse. Are 5590s cheaper than 3680s? A 3680 should be less than $600.

No problem at all: that's what I'm using in my quad 2009 Mac Pro, while I wait for the 6-core's price to come down.

The 6-core x5650's are down to <$250 a piece now and might be a nice option too even in a single CPU system.

While single socket CPUs will not work on dual socket boards due to the lack of QPI, to my knowledge, there should be no problem with the inverse.
