I've waited forever for the iPhone and now it's getting so close. I am still a Cingular customer and on a family plan but I actually spend most of the year in Asia where I live and work. iPhone is not coming to Asia until 2008 but I could get it through Cingular when it comes out in June. However, that one would be locked and I won't be able to use it for most of the year, unless someone figures out how to lock it. I currently have a Treo 650 but it's bulkiness is increasingly driving me crazy. I've been thinking about getting a Treo 680 and then sell it when I can get an unlocked iPhone, either in Asia in 2008 or in Europe or when someone figures out how to unlock a Cingular one. Or should I just wait?

I know it's tough, but just wait. The 680 is a little smaller than the 650, but at the expense of battery life (the 680 has a smaller battery). It's not much of an upgrade. You could consider getting an aftermarket short antenna for the 650 at http://www.treoantenna.com to tide you over.

unless you are really fond of palm OS (access or whatever they call it now), i think you'd be better off w/ an iphone or a symbian based phone.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I've read about the sacrifice of battery life, which is somewhat important to me. I also actually like the Palm OS. I had a Sony Ericsson m600i with Symbian OS and it's very sleek but it was so slow that I went back to my Treo. However, it might simply not be waiting four months for me...I have no idea when in 2008 iPhone will be coming to Asia and/or when someone can figure out how to unlock a Cingular iphone.... With that in mind, should I still wait?

Thanks so much for the link. I just checked it out and might actually get this to tie me over!

buy a phone u can't use? Unless u just want to use iPhone as a iPod+PDA, then iPhone is not for u.

I think the Treo 680 is an excellent upgrade to the 650, I just bought it. While battery life is decreased, nightly charging is nearly required. There are some battery upgrades available and I have even seen a nice portable charger that charges the phone and an additional battery.

The form factor while only slightly smaller make a huge difference. The 680 is much easier to manage now. If you're already accustomed to the Palm OS then it's a no brainer, many of the OS conventions are similar to Mac OS.

Looks like apple has a few kinks to work out on the iPhone, I hope it's not another newton and improves quickly with later versions.

R U MAD!!! I have a Treo 650. I am counting down the days until the iPhone hits. I am losing sleep over it actually. No Treo, no matter what they say is worth getting over the iPhone. If with the fact that we really don't know the full specs yet!!! I would wait, if it comes and you still want the 680 I am sure they will not be going anywhere anytime soon:)

Not quite mad, very happy with my decision and sharing my experience. I believe the ipod has a great interface, but slow and clunky with response sometimes. Hopefully the iPhone improves on this.

Additionally, look at all the third party software that already exists for the Palm OS, including support for Word, XL, and several databases.

Also it's difficult to replace the Palm OS when you've been using a Palm since the original Palm Pilot. Not that I'm not incredibly excited to get my hands on it and see how well their "innovative" new interface works.
