I've been a fan of small laptops a long time, and after using pb duos for a long time i've really enjoyed both my 12-inch pb's.

So now, I need (or want) a new book soon. I've seen the new macbooks, but glossy screen and lack of proper video out, videocard etc is making me turn down the macbook.

When will there be a 12/13 inch mbpro, or do I have to get a 15-inch?

the basic answer is "it seems like the answer is no"

we know this b/c apple keeps on saying & advertising
"here is the complete line of new laptops"
"the family is complete"
...etc

aka- no 12"

i'm a 12" pb user myself
& it seems as if there isn't going to be one coming out

sorry
(i'm pretty sure there have been other threads along this line)

What's wrong with the video out on the Macbook? Isn't it exactly the same as the 12" PB, i.e., mini-DVI?

Probably never... since rumors has it they plan to come out with an ultra portable computer. If you need the computer now, buy the 15 inch if you need high end graphic

I dont think so.

I thought the high end macbook was supposed to be its replacement?
even tho its missing some of the "pro" features

I say stop dreaming and open your eyes. No one knows for sure, but I don't expect them to have one. You have 2 choices currently: settle for a larger laptop or one without a few select features. If none of thoose options sit with you, well you're out of luck for quite a while.

i doubt it. i think that may be why the MB and MBPs aren't horribly far apart in terms of performance, so that apple can justify not having a smaller pro line.. but that's just my opinion.

Unluckily it seems that there will be no new laptops anytime soon. There have been some rumors lately about an ultraportable, but I would take that with a grain of salt. No dedicated video ram would be a reason why I wouldn't get a macbook either. Though I get to play with one regularly and they really a lot better built than ibooks

It's not gonna happen...unless
you count that new Tablet computer apple is about to come out with. :D
well... maybe its just "rumored" but i know its gonna happen!! Just dont know when!!

Somewhere on Apple's site I remember reading something like "Macbook replaces the iBook G4 and 12" PowerBook" so as of now, I'd say no. Although, I have to agree. I'd like to see a pro laptop (with dedicated video, etc.) in a minature MBP package aka a 12" MBP.

I can remember when Apple had only two laptops (12" iBook and 15" Titanium PowerBook.) At the time, that was Apple's "Complete" lineup, too. Then they added the 14" iBook. Then the 12" and 17" PowerBooks.

Apple will add new sizes and models as time goes on. Whether that will be in two months or two years is a question only Apple can answer.

i don't understand everyone's problem with the glossy screen. it provides better graphics than the powerbooks. SUCH a wide viewing angle and there is no problem with reflection unless the screen is completely black - which shouldn't bother anybody. don't turn down the glossy screen until you've seen/used it. if you are planning on buying an mpb just for the non glossy screen, then im sorry you're wasting your money.

Am sure Apple tried doing a 12" MBP, but i think putting a CoreDuo in such a small package was just asking too much.
Maybe another ultraportable under another name using a slower, low-power cpu will do the job, and there have been rumors around that too. ;)

No, there is a very thin line between the MacBooks and the 15" MacBook Pro. A 12 or 13-inch MBP will take sales away from the MacBooks, and Apple definitely doesn't want that. However, an ultra-portable is possible.

That is a good point. I have to agree with that one. Just as for anytime in the near future, I think the mac lineup won't update.

I wish there was a 13.3 in pro laptop. I currently have a 12in iBook and love it because it is easy to carry aroud.

I wish there was a true 13in Pro laptop. I want to replace my iBook and iMac with a laptop but i dont really want a 15in cause i want to be able to carry it around on campus a lot. I know i would still be able to carry a 15in but it still comes down to size. And, i am not going to replace two computers (both with dedicated graphics) for a 13in laptop with integrated graphics. Ideally i would like to replace the iMac with a mini that will be hooked up to an LCD TV for DVD's and front row and the iBook will be replaces by a 13in Pro laptop.

I would be satisfied if they gave me the specs of the 15in in a 13in enclosure(of course alluminum).

I do beleive there is a market for a 13in Pro laptop. Heres to hoping apple releases one of these sooner rather then later.

And before someone asks what professional applications i would be using on a 13" notebook that need a better gpu??

I am in college right now and i was planning on getting it so that i could have windows to run the Auto CAD and 3-D modeling programs i need for my engineering degree.

I know there are going to be some people that will say, "but you need the screen realestate for that kinda stuff." Well that is waht they make external displays for. I just prefer to have a smaller laptop to take around, but i want you that can handle my CAD stuff.

Apple needs to move away from aluminum and move towards something that can better unify the design of the product line - MacBook through MacBook Pro. I shouldn't have to settle for a high priced 15-inch MBP if I want a 15-inch display and only need integrated graphics, which could be offered at a lower price. Basically every size should be offered as an alternative MacBook without the "pro" designation so to make the Mac more attractive as a whole. I don't really like Apple's current laptop strategy.

It will come when Apple needs to boost the margins on their laptop lines...

As the MacBook is new, and they can get away with charging 12" PB-like prices for the BlackBook, this is some time away.

However, with the inevitable price cuts that will come as this initial burst of pent up demand diminishes, they may well stick a 13" MBP into the line-up to ensure that there is a high margin small laptop...

agree on the market

i really need a small latop which can run FCP. i dont mind integrated graphics as such since i dont game but apple's pro apps require dedicated card. makes me a little angry that since the arrival of the new motherboards we also received a dividing line when it comes to application usage.

the bottom line is that as a pro user i dont want to be a pro wrestler too, just to carry my equipment around. for i can live w/ the last revision 12PB but really hope that in 1 or 2 yrs time i can upgrade as a happy chap..

the black macbook is the replacement for the 12 inch powerbook as far as i know. the end.

I doubt it. Think of all that heat being generated in such a small inclosure. The heat from the 15" is nothing compared to how hot a 12" MBP would get.

Apple need to fix the heat issue before we see smaller MBP form factors IMO.

I highly doubt that there will be a release which is saddening to those that like the pro features as well as the little things like a backlit keyboard, etc, who now have to settle for other compromises for just a smaller enclosure.

Maybe a 10'' widescreen little bugger will be released but who knows. As for a 12/13, nah :(
