I think that the real mass adoption of Apple TV will occur when further integration with TV channels occurs... Imagine being able to watch your Lost episode 10 minutes after it started, but, instead of losing that part of the show, being able to see it from the beginning at no charge... Maybe ABC could do it for same-day shows.

Also, there is plenty of room for Apple TV to function as a TIVO recorder, as long as it does not compete with the rent/sell business from Itunes.

In the end, Apple TV will retire

your TIVO
your DVD player
your PS3
and your Cable Provider - unless you use it to connect to the internet.

Apple TV is small box that can bring big changes.

Sometimes the shortest distance...

Sometimes the shortest path between two points is A CURVE!

Apple big bucks will come from selling content, no doubt about it... However, they need a killer app to make everyone buy their ATV. This could be a rich catalogue of films, but due to the resistance of studios to commit to ATV I think Apple will have to come up with creative solutions in the next couple years.

The strategy would be simple... if ATV is too big to ignore, studios will ultimately come. I strong believe in this, Apple is trying to increase penetration of ATV despite limited availability of films by...

... allowing you to view You Tube videos (no extra money)
... allowing to view photos (no extra money)
... allowing you to view podcasts (no extra money)
... allowing you to upload "special" dvds into Itunes (no extra money)

and when lots of people have ATV

... big money from movies. Think about it.

It is not a choice

I am not saying this will occur in 1, 2 or 3 years... Only that this is the final outcome. Who would imagine that the Ipod would evolve to the Iphone in such a short time.

In the end, hardware is a commodity (hds, flash cards, intel chips, wi-fi routers) and Apple will triumph because of its software user interface. This is pretty evident in ATV Take 2 - same hardware, whole different experience. It is all about software.
