Hello everyone.

I've been having frequent wake from sleep issues with my iMac for the past few months. It's usually one of the following.

1. Blue screen.

2. Black screen, but I can tell the screen is on.

3. A folder with a question mark.

The question mark instance is more rare and it goes away when I turn off the iMac and then turn it back on while holding the option key, as I was told to do on a YouTube video.

The blue and black screens are more frequent and quite frustrating. After about a minute the iMac will return to normal, but obviously this shouldn't be happening to begin with.

I did just run first aid via Disc Utility on the HD. I will see if that fixes the issues or not.

Need more information. What year and model iMac? What version of Catalina is installed? What external devices do you have connected to the iMac?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)

10.15.5

I have a keyboard connected to the iMac. These issues began before I used this keyboard so I don't think that is related.

A few things to try:
  • Perform a PRAM and SMC reset.
  • If you force the computer to sleep, let it sit for 10mins and wake it up does the issue still happen?
  • Create a new user account, restart the computer and login to the new user account. See if the sleep issue happens in the new user account.
  • Boot into Recovery Mode (command-key R-key). Download the latest Catalina and install it on top of your current OS.
