Wake from sleep issue in log in screen

Hi all!

I have a nagging issue with my 2012 Mac Mini. Wake from sleep works fine if I'm logged in, but if I'm at log in screen the screen stays black with spinning beach ball? Turning the screen off and back on usually resolves this issue, but it's still a pain in the a. What's going on?

I have HP w2207 screen connected via HDMI to dvi adapter and dvi cable.
