OK, how many people have experienced this?

If my Mac, recently installed with Mountain Lion, goes to sleep for an extended period of time (maybe hours rather than minutes), upon waking, everything hangs, freezes, whatever you want to call it. Beachballs over every app. Nothing responds, not even attempts to force-quit.

It appears to be related to WiFi because it only seems to happen when, waking from sleep, the Airport icon in the menubar keeps searching but never connects (often ending up with the little exclamation mark icon inside it).

This is a serious issue because it requires a forced shutdown (pressing and holding the power button), and that's never good for the OS. Even after that, on restart, I see the screen flickering, so I usually restart again and then everything's back to normal - until it happens again.

At first I thought it only occurred when the Mac fell asleep on its own, and not when I sent it to sleep by way of option-command-eject, but sadly now I see that it happens in that scenario as well.

One time it did this, I lost a password-protected Numbers spreadsheet forever, as it was open when the machine froze, and on restart it claimed it was missing the "index.xml" file - the document was no doubt corrupted when the machine froze.

This kind of thing makes me feel that Mountain Lion wasn't really ready for release.

Anyone else get this?

Same Issues for me as well

I have the exact same issues with my iMac since I upgraded to mountain lion. Any one else? Is this what we get for being early adopters? Frustrating to have to hard reset so much.

Mountain Lion Sleep Issues

Yeah, it's great to be an early adopter. My plan was to upgrade to Lion just before mountain lion was released. Whoops, no more Lion available. I'm getting unable to awake, spinning rainbow pizza with WiFi searching. Not sure what's going on , hope for a fix soon. Otherwise it's reboot city.

Add me to the list of people with issues. Every other day, the computer is frozen solid when coming out of sleep, requiring a hard reset. I am currently doing a HD clone and Time Machine backup, and going to do a clean install of 10.8.1 to see if that helps. Very annoying... It happens on both my iMac and MacBook Pro.

I've got same thing happening to my 2.8ghz MacBook Pro, running 10.8.1. I'm not sure if the sleep image is corrupted ? Or if it's something to do with wi-fi ? Apple needs to fix this problem ASAP !!!

Type of base station?

I'm having this issue as well on my MacBook Pro. While it happens every single time I wake the machine up on my home network, I've only seen it happen once or twice that I can recall on my office network.

I'm using an Airport Express in bridged mode at home. Curious to know what models of base station everyone else is using? Both the laptop and the base station are fully patched with software and firmware updates.

BTW, rather than doing a hard reset, I've been force quitting all my running apps individually. Once everything that's trying to connect to the network is shut down, a normal restart will work. Probably slightly better for your system, though it takes a little longer.

I've had the same issue at least 10 times on my mid-2011 MBP and have been doing the same thing jasonhuck is. It works, but it sure is inconvenient, and as a converted Windows user, it makes me feel like I'm back in the MS world. I'm using a Cisco Lynksys b/g/n dual band wireless router.

Transmit Menu Bar

FYI, on a tip from a friend, I disabled the Transmit menu bar, and have not had the problem reoccur since. Any of the rest of you running Panic's Transmit?

I use Transmit, but disabling the menubar thing doesn't make any difference.

I have to disable WiFi on my iMac to avoid the bug.

I've had the "wake from sleep and computer is hard frozen" thing happen a few times. Each time, I gave up and powered the system off. However, the last time this happened, I just left it and it eventually returned to normal.

The next time it happens to you, just leave the computer alone for a couple minutes.

Same thing ever since upgrading to 10.8 - iMac late 2011

I have been dealing with this issue on my work computer for about 6 weeks ever since I upgraded to OSX 10.8.. My only solution has been to manually close everything and do a complete shut down at the end of the day everyday.. Waiting for the machine to start up each morning is much less time consuming then waiting for it to fix itself by force quitting everything, not to mention the imminent danger of having unsaved changes lost or corrupting important files. I wish apple made it easy to switch back to the older os that worked perfectly fine for me. I don't even use any of the new features from 10.8. Next time I will not so hastily give my faith to apple and adopt early, especially on such an important machine that essentially controls all of my income.
