What needs to be done?

Today I had friends in the US who went to the ATT store twice and both times were not sold an iPhone for some reason.

Can you tell me what needs to be done to walk in, buy it, walk out?

I have a relative coming from the US (I live in Canada) and I want him to pick me up one...

I don't want the same thing to happen twice...

am I more likely to get one at Apple or ATT store? thanks...

Visit your local Apple store. You'll get better service.

The AT&T reps don't get a good commission on you purchasing an iPhone than a non-iPhone, so they make it a little bit more difficult to attain one. Most stores don't even have a demo unit available for customers to look at. If you absolutely positively MUST purchase from an AT&T store, be firm: ask them for an 8GB iPhone and don't take no for an answer. If they don't have any in stock, make sure you call up the next store before driving over.

Good luck.

im looking to get one unlocked...do you have to sign a contract when you buy one or can you just buy one straight up like any other electronic device from the apple store?

The AT&T store will offer to do a pre-creidt check. This makes sure the customer's credit is not going to declined during the activation process and subject to a restocking charge if they bring the phone back when they can't get it activated.

They did not make it too "optional" when I purchased one from AT&T on release day. You can always say your buying it for a gift and they should just let you buy it and leave the store. Remember people that work in cell phone stores get paid on comissions on activiation of phones so they do what ever they can to make sure you activate it soon after its purchase.

I just bought an 8GB iPhone Friday. Just walk into an Apple Store and tell them you want an iPhone. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes.

Not sure what your friend is telling the ATT store when he went to buy it.

Just have them go in, ask for an iPhone tell them they are buying it as a gift if they want to do a credit check and they will just give it to you.

If they have problem, just goto the Apple store.

I'm hoping your friend is not telling the ATT store its for international friend who plans on unlocking it. Of course if he said this they would not sell the phone.

If you want to make it eaiser, just order it online at Apple.com

Hope this helps.

I just walked in and bought one, they asked it if was for me or a gift, I said gift and they didn't bother with the pre-screen check.

I just got my iPhone at the Apple Store. Took less than 5 minutes. I just asked them for the iPhone, he went to the back, came back with one in hand, paid for it, and walked out.

However, my friend just got a 4gb iPhone from the ATT store 3 days ago. He was able to get it, but before he could, the ATT employee asked him if he had an ATT contract already, and for a bunch of other info. Of course my friend just lied and made up some story, so he was able to walk out with one.

Well, good news.

My relative in California swung by an Apple store, picked me up a brand new 8GB iPhone and I will be getting it Tuesday night. WOOHOO.

I see Apple stores are much less of a pain in the ass than ATT stores.

You have to have money in you bank account. Chances are they told the store rep that it was for you in Canada, and they most likely told them why it won't work in Canada, unless you want to pay hundreds for service.
