I'm sure many of you are enjoying your new iCloud purchases. I know I am! Curious if anybody knows if the trade-in program that Walmart is doing for Ultra-violet Vudu digital copy will work with iTunes when it hits the ground.

I'm aware that Apple is not a member of the Ultra-Violet consortium, but I wasn't sure if there would be a choice for iTunes involved.

Thanks for any help!

The Walmart program does sound interesting. But I haven't heard good things about UltraViolet so far. But being able to upgrade a regular DVD to HD for $5 might be compelling for some people.

I know that if you email Ultraviolet saying you can't get the movie to play on your iPhone they send you a code to redeem through iTunes, I've done this for the last Harry Potter and was sent a disc and an iTunes code for Horrible Bosses. Do you think that would work for the HD download? Would be interesting if I could pay $5 a DVD and use that work around to get that had version in iTunes.

According to this article: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/story/2012-03-13/ultraviolet-walmart/53513136/1 it sounds like the Walmart program is managed through the Vudu service. No Vudu "app" on :apple:TV probably means we're out until that app arrives.

The article does reference iDevices for playback though (but probably because they can access Vudu.com), so this might fly for those who want to airplay them from an iDevice to :apple:TV.

There is a pretty good chance it will work with "Smart TVs" that have the Vudu app.

To me, it looks like an iCloud-like "stream everything" effort toward trying to achieve a similar iTunes-like lock in. It appears they'll store one master copy in SD and HD on Vudu servers (like iCloud) and then stream the appropriate copy to you on demand (like iCloud). Like iTunes, the relationship with Vudu will be key to having access to the media. It probably can't be downloaded and stored locally (thus, no real ownership of the digital file should- say- Vudu go under, other than your ownership of the original DVD or BD media). So, it appears they're not really ripping your own disc but are instead making proof that you own the physical disc + $2 or $5 a personal key for you gaining access to the master file stream via Vudu.

The idea of paying 2 dollars for them to rip your dvd is ridiculous when it is easily done on your own, but 5 dollars to upgrade to HD is maybe worth it

Yeah, I've read about this and I'm wondering if it's the only way to get your copy in the iTunes purchased cloud. I recently purchased a copy of "The Adventures of TinTin" and the included insert had a code that worked with both Ultra-Violet and iTunes. I was curious if the Walmart program would do something similar.

I'm actually hoping the ATV doesn't add a Vudu app. While I agree that generally more choice and competition is better, I don't want my libraries split between Vudu and iTunes. I'd rather keep them in iTunes, like my music. I really hope this doesn't turn into a format war either. Besides, the movie studios have way too much control of Ultra-Violet and they consistently seem to shaft their users.

I have in the past been able to get the itunes code for previous ultraviolet digital copies that came with my bluray purchase. I emailed ultraviolet support about this and whether it would apply to the HD upgrade program. I received a response saying that if I had a problem getting a movie to run on my device I need to connect it to their site to work it out or contact the makers of the app. Not exactly answering my question. I think I'll wait until Apple and Warner Bros / universal get that rumored deal worked out about streaming their content through iTunes and write to them again.

I could not agree with you more. If they offered this service, but then allowed the movies to be played in iTunes, I'd be all in to upgrade a ton of DVDs to HD digital files. But I don't want my movies in multiple apps/locations.

I was going to make a thread about this topic until I saw this one here.

I am very excited for this. I have allot of DVD's from the early 2000's that are just sitting around.

http://www.vudu.com/

Handbrake simply does not cut it for me. I have had to re-encode so many movies after I thought they were perfect only to find a huge ******* up in my picture while watching them on my tv.

Anyhow, This Vudu/Walmart deal is much better since it requires no work at all. The Vudu website works just like an App for the iPad so no downloading, syncing, etc....

I probably will pay for some movies to be in HD for $5 but it's a huge relief that I do not have to use Handbrake and go through hundreds of hours of my personal time to get it right.

After I take my dvd collection in I will sell them off for money while retaining my original collection in the Vudu Cloud.

Morally, I don't care. I paid for them and I will sell them and still keep my movies.

Enjoy trolling me about morality/It's stealing B.S.:)

If I didn't hate UltraViolet with a passion anyway, it's still stupid to pay $2 or $5 for a lower-quality version of something I already own.

Old thread but I didn't see the need to make a new one...

Wouldn't this be great if Apple could make such a deal with the studios... Not the DVD to SD movie online thing... But for the DVD upgraded to HD ... Heck I'd even be willing to go 6 bucks per title if I had too.

I'm quite good at ripping my DVDs and blurays so why would I be willing to pay 6 bucks? One... My DVD collection is far bigger than my BR collection and two having it officially recognized and 'blessed' in the iTunes universe means not having to worry so much about having the 'right movies' on the right devices.... Also having the universal iTunes / iCloud backup is priceless.

i want everything i own 'in the cloud' as far as movies.

i just get in the VUDU/UV bandwagon.
its too many steps to get the movie playing & i like all of my stuff in one spot.......itunes

if every movie came in itunes & uv format, it wouldnt be an issue.
being that some movies are UV only, i wont bother using that digital copy or buy that bluray
