Want a 1TB iMac, but they wont let me.

Whenever I end up getting my iMac, i am going to get the 3.06ghz model. i was also planning on getting 1tb hard drive, but also want the 12% educational discount which can only be done in store. but instore they wont give me a custom built one. Is there anything any one would recommend.

Whether i get 1TB or not, i am also going to get an external USB hard drive. the one i was thinking on getting was this one

Its fanless which is important because the computer is in the same room as i sleep in, and i know iMacs are quite so the hard drive should be as well... Any suggestions?

I dunno what you're talking about. You can get the educational discount online.

Go to http://store.apple.com/us
Click on "Education Store" in the left hand column and find your school
then configure the computer you want and buy it.

PS: If you have that much stuff that you require a 1TB drive it'd be best to just configure your computer with a large enough drive for your apps and OS, then get an external drive that stores all your extra media. That way your media drive lasts longer as it won't be read/written to as often. Then get another external drive to back up your internal and your media drive.

well yes i know you can discount online. but in the UK at least, you get 6% discount online and 12% discount in store. so there is quite a difference in price. what i was thinking of doing is putting all my iTunes - websites - photos - movies etc on the hard drive and then have a dual boot of os x and XP on the mac. i guess 500gb is enough, but i dont really know how much os x uses up, or the average size of programs or anything like that

OS X will use, with about 20 to 30 apps installed, about 20GB of space. Unless you install something like final cut studio which I think uses about 50GB. Snow Leopard should cut down how much space OS X takes up, so once you get the next OS then you'll gain some more hard disk space.

OS X uses 6-9GB, depending on the install. Apps take, well, whatever they take. Seriously, 500GB should be plenty, unless you start wanting to store hundreds of thousands of songs, images, video files, store your DVD collection, etc. On my 320GB HDD in the MacBook, I'm using under 140GB now, and that includes all the iApps and the photos/videos/music that goes with them, three virtual machines (33GB right there), and MS Office with years worth of archive data, not to mention all my website-related stuff.

Just make sure that whatever solution you settle on, that you have a viable backup plan.

If you move your media to an external, as has been suggested, you will still need to back up that external HD.

well thing is that im not at the university yet. and want to get it before. but im just going to stick with 500gb. ive got a 160gb in my laptop and its okish for space, and a 500gb NAS and thats nearly run out. but i plan on getting the WD 1TB blablab edition 2 (the one with firewire and network (i think)).

and the reason i need so much is because i have a lot of movies (yes all legal copied from my own dvds), plenty of music, and a two complete series of family guy and scrubs which by them self take up over 30gb... and then i have ISO images of loads of games and also iso's of psp games. and then world of warcraft plus expansions (if i ever actually play it)

are you going to university this year? i ordered my iMac today over the phone as i can't access the Higher Education store through the home network. i ordered an iMac 24' 3.06ghz and customized it with 1TB HD and 4GB ram.

Apple also gives 3 year warranty on parts and labour as standard on higher education purchase. if i did choose to buy applecare i would only get extended telephone support which i really don't need!

If you are going to university this year, all you need to do is scan in your UCAS acceptance letter as proof that you are a higher education student and send it through email!

my iMac is coming next week can't wait!

Just buy a 1TB external and be done. Why are you needing a 1TB internal anyway? I have a 160GB internal and two 500GB externals, one is used as a backup and photo storage, the other is music and my design files.
