want to change finder/system pref icon

I've read a few threads on changing icons and it was pretty easy. I've changed a few and wanted to move on to others. I've wanted to change the finder and system prefs icon for a while, but I found that it doesn't work. I'm wondering if it is possible? When I looked at the info for both finder and system prefs under ownership and permission it's greyed and unchangeable to read only.

I'm the only user for this computer and owner, is there something I must have done somewhere down the line to disallow changing stuff?

Hi, yes to change the system pref icon you must change the owner ship. In the screenshot below you would select your user name in place of "admin". It will ask for a password and there you can change the system pref icon.

the finder is a different matter, if you are change it because you want it to look different in the dock you must goto /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/ and in this folder is a file called finder.png, this controls the finder icon with in the dock. The file must be a png. (also note if you delete this file and reset the dock cache it the finder icon will default to the original icon inside the finder.app folder). However in the interface dialogs to change the icon you have to replace the icon file inside the finder application itself. This stuff to requires your password and changing of permissions.

After you are done you should use disk utility to repair the permissions again. And you should logout and login for changes to the dock.. If they don't change you might have to delete your com.apple.dock.iconcache.501.

There is a nice FAQ here by interfacelift, especially check out 4 and 6, as they talk about the System Prefs and Finder and Trash icons. They give you the option of either doing it manually (The free way ) or they alternatively give programs (such as candybar) that do the job automatically for you.

I recommend using CandyBar, which allows you to change icons really easily, including apps, and icons inside apps. Shareware but can use the 30day trial.
