I want to change my iTunes "Apple ID" from my Yahoo! email address to my new me.com address.

It will not let me. Says something about having to cancel existing account and establishing a new one.

Is this correct? Why is it so much trouble? Is there an easier way?

Yes, that is correct. iTunes won't let you change your ID. If you want a "different" ID, you need to create a new account with the new ID you want.

changing apple id

Hey, you can change your id and email address for itunes without a new account. Go to apple.com's support page, under browse support on the left select itunes store, in the middle of the page there is a section for manage your account and you should see the appropriate section. Hope this helps and you haven't already made a new account!

Clarification on Changing iTunes "Apple ID" to MobileMe account

After trying to change my old iTunes Apple ID to my MobileMe, I called Apple tech support on this issue. When you change the iTunes Apple ID, you are really creating a second Apple ID (account). All your history and any credits (money) do not transfer to the new account. Tech support says that your previous purchases are linked to the authorized machines and therefore should play correctly.
