I'm planning on getting a 3gs the first week of January when my verizon contract runs out {FINALLY!!!!}. It's going to be my first iphone, and my first apple product in general {since my quadra in high school haha}. I've read up on what jailbreaking does, but i can't quite understand what unlocking does besides being able to use the phone in other country's or other networds sans-at&t....which i don't plan on doing.....

i'm going to be using my girlfriend's toshiba laptop for the jailbreaking with blackra1n, and i know it's probably going to be a tethered jailbreak and i'll have to connect it to a computer if it needs to be restarted or if the battery dies. just wanted to point out that i'm doing my research haha.

i want to be able to customise my iphone and use the cool hacks that come with jailbreaking, but do i really need to uplock it as well? i couldn't quite figure that part out....

No, you don't need to unlock if you are staying with AT&T and don't plan to travel internationally. Unlocking is a separate process from jailbreaking. You need to jailbreak in order to unlock, but if you just want to jailbreak, there is no need to unlock.

No you won't need or have to unlock. Jailbreaking let's you customize and unlocking let's you switch carriers. So you'll just JB. When you run blackra1n it will install it's app. When you run the app it will give you three choices, install rock, install cydia, and unlock. Just don't ever unlock.

if u plan on staying with att then a unlock is not needed. jailbreak is all u need.

If you plan on selling it in the future it would be wise to keep it on an unlockable baseband.
Im sure on the next update Apple will patch up the baseband exploit used to unlock the phone, if you choose to update your firmware but not the baseband your phone could potentially worth more in the future if it can be used on any GSM carrier for example.

i'm not quite sure what you mean......come july-ish, i AM planing on selling the phone on ebay or craigslist so that i can use the money towards the next-gen iphone. what if i was to just unlock it right before selling it? i just don't see a reason for unlocking it right now, and having to go through all ths trouble of re-locking it if it needs service from an apple store. one less thing i need to worry about, expecially if unlocking will do NOTHING for me.....

What AppleJuiced was trying to say is that there is no reason to unlock, but that you should still be careful if a new firmware comes out between now and when you sell your phone not to upgrade until the DevTeam says it's safe to do so. It's always possible that any new upgrade could make your phone un-unlockable.

ah ok, i hear ya then. so there's no point in unlocking for me, and only upgrade firmwares if DevTeam has made a hack/jb for it....
