Hello

I have been browsing the web for the past few hours and haven't found exactly what I am looking for.

My current phone.

Iphone 3g
standard at&t service
firmware/version = 3.0.1(7A400)
carrier = AT&T 6.0
baseband or modem firmware 05.11.07

I currently use the ben.m tethering hack as I rely on it for home internet access.

I also use the mms picture messageing.

The reasons I want to jailbreak are so that I can use my phone for tethering on any computer even if it doesn't have itunes.

My ways of getting around this was to use the app goodreader usb as a flash drive that had itunes on it.

When i first bought goodreader it was version 2.3 but I have recently upgraded to the newest version and now i would like the old version 2.3 back.

Also I would like to be able to watch .avi video files on my phone.

SO here I am looking to jailbreak but I would like the following to happen.

1- I would like to be able to keep my current settings like my apps, app settings, contacts, call history, mail settings, text message history, photos. I also have the system activety monitor app old version that allows me to free my runtime memory and i would like to keep this app version. I just backed up my phone's current settings in itunes. I am ok with losing my music and video files

2 - I would like to have tethering available. If tethering will work on any computer ( having no itunes) this would be great.

But if it still requires itunes I think I have a work around.

I understand a JB iphone allows you to install cracked apps in some sort. Well I would just download goodreader 2.3 and use it like a regular usb drive.

PS im not into it to screw app developers. I basically just want the old version of the app I paid for.

3. I would like to have MMS picture messaging.

Is this do able.?

I also have a windows XP computer, no mac :-(

So knowing these requirements what is my best method of Jailbreaking. Should I use redsn0w, or blackra1n. Also an proven youtube guides would be great.

any advice opinions etc would be appreciated.

Thank You!

Nate

anybody? any help would be greatly appreciated

The Jailbreak application you are looking for is MyWi. This application routes off your carriers internet service through the iPhones Wi-Fi chip. It acts as a router and modem in one, in which one device can connect to. This Wi-Fi chip was designed for a phone, so thats why you can only connect one device at a time.

Cool, that sounds good, and would work for any tethering issues.

Lets back up a bit to JB.

If i wanted to use redsn0w. which version would I use, since I have the 05.11.07 baseband. If i use the newest version will it work with my firmware of 3.01.?

I am still learning about all this stuff, but if I use redn0w am i correct in saying that it will not change my baseband, nor will it affect my data and applications?

Or can I use the newest version of redsn0w to JB, then when it asks for the ipw file point it in the location of my saved itunes backup?

Also I am not against upgrading to 3.1.2. So that may make another method doable.

Well, I would suggest upgrading to 3.1.2, then Jailbreaking with Blackra1n. I am saying this because most of the newer apps might not work with 3.0.1.

Ok, I was thinking this might be an option.

So the process would go a little like this.

I would upgrade to 3.1.2 using itunes, and use a custom 3.1.2 firmware. would this keep my settings? I assume yes.

Then you say i should use blackra1n. Would redsnow .9.2 work better since it keeps my settings?..but the non beta version doesn't having the ipcc tethering

You can use redsn0w or Blackra1n. Its up to you. With redsn0w you can choose custom boot logos, and have a verbose boot, (which is cool). What you need to do, is go on the internet and download the iPhone 3G 3.1.2 Firmware File, drag to your desktop, plug your phone in and open iTunes. In iTunes, go to your iPhone on the sidebar, in the center of the Summary tab, closer to the right, it will say Check for Update. Hold shift and click restore, and select the iPhone 3G 3.1.2 Firmware File you downloaded and dragged to your desktop. It will update you to 3.1.2, and then you can Jailbreak. Have fun with your new extremely awesome and powerful device! ;)

Thanks, I think I understand that process, thanks for the guiding tips. But when I install this custom firmware 1) will it keep my settings, and 2) with the news of digital signings will itunes accept this non official 3g 3.1.2 firmware file?

It is not a custom firmware. This is stock firmware that your going to download. Don't download it from iTunes. You are holding shift and clicking Check for Update, not restoring. Updating keeps all your information, and upgrades your firmware, the restore button obviously restores. Also, incase you didn't know, redsn0w does not make a custom firmware, it modifies the firmware already on your phone. When redsn0w asks you to browse for the .ipsw, choose the one on your desktop. Click next, and click install Cydia, and you can have a Verbose boot, which is when you turn it on, it scrolls through a whole bunch of codes, which I think is really cool. You can also choose to have a custom boot and recovery mode logo. They need to be in Grayscale, or RGB.
If you were wondering, the iPhone screen in 320x480.

haha nice. I am curretnly downloading the 3g modem firmware 3.1.2 from http://www.poorlad.com/iCommunity/...33 min remaining.

I will be extra careful and read twice making sure I am UPDATING.

I was thinking I would rather use redsn0w, it sounds safer in keeping my data safe. At this point im not sure if i need a custom verbose boot, maybe i can add the matrix code later.

But I saw this

ADVICE: DO NOT USE REDSN0W AFTER DOING A STOCK APPLE UPGRADE TO 3.1.2 IF YOU NEED A CARRIER UNLOCK AND ARE CURRENTLY USING BASEBAND 04.26 OR EARLIER. The key part of that advice is “do not do a stock Apple upgrade to 3.1.2”. You really want to keep that 04.26 baseband on there because then you can keep using ultrasn0w. Ultrasn0w doesn't have the wifi issues that some people (10-20%) report when using geohot's blacksn0w unlock on 05.11. If you are at 04.26 or earlier, use a custom IPSW from PwnageTool to update your firmware to 3.1.2, or just stay at 3.0 and use redsn0w there (redsn0w and ultrasn0w work on both 3.0 and 3.1.2, but ultrasn0w needs baseband 04.26).

I realize my baseband is updated past 04.26.

So according to this i can use redsn0w but i cannot use ultrasn0w. Not sure If i need ultrasnow??

Also redsnow's current non beta version .9.2 doesn't have the PCC tethering hack. Only beta version .9.3 does. Should I use this?

OR
should I just use blackra1n. Im currently researching it too see if it will work best for my situation.

You are on AT&T, there is no need to unlock. If you happen to switch carriers, by some cause, such as AT&T kicking you off their network, then you can use GeoHot's BlackSn0w unlock for baseband 05.11.07. Don't update to 3.1.3, or you wont be able to unlock.

Actually... 3.1.3 is jailbroken. Since you don't care about unlock and already can't you might as well just update that way.

You can just update your phone to 3.1.3 in iTunes (that will preserve anything you have on it now) and then run redsn0w. You will still need to download the 3.1.2 firmware because redsn0w will ask you to select the firmware and you just chose the file you downloaded for 3.1.2.

This is covered on the Dev-Team blog: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/367262620/3-1-3-and-thee

In summary...
  1. Update to 3.1.3 in iTunes.
  2. Download the 3.1.2 firmware from any other source (looks like you're doing this)
  3. Download redsn0w from the link I gave
  4. Run redsn0w and point it to the 3.1.2 firmware you downloaded

Easy Peasy!

Thanks guys for the input.

I Jailbroke my phone using redsnow .9.3. NOw I have problems with my 3g just stopping. It lets me open a page in safari and then after a while it stops working with an error message that comes up.

I am now going through the process of backing up my stuff like:
sms settings
notes
call history
contacts
app store
youtube favorites
safari book marks by copying the directories of them in my iphone to my hard drive.

This way I can do a full system restore to firmware 3.1.2. I'm staying away from 3.1.3 as im happy with my baseband.

I am considering using a different program for JB.

maybe the other version of redsnow .9.2, or even blackra1n.

I don't have a mac so I can't use pawnagetools as if i knew how.

what does everyone else use for JB.

If you updated to 3.1.3, you cannot downgrade your baseband. So you are stuck on AT&T until a new unlock is released. Not that you would need an unlock but you seemed pretty convinced that you do.

So I did my reinstall of redsn0w via a new restore. Prior to this I saved my apps in chronus. I saved my other apps such as facebook, goodreader, and sytem activity monitor, etc but when i got into cydia and chronus again these non native apps didn't show an dhave a restore option.

I di dhave these backed up via itunes, but when setup a new install and synced i didn't get to check off the automaitcally resync so i think it over wrote my past apps.

Not a horrible thing, atleast i got my contacts, and safari bookmarks.

But I did dl goodreader 2.3, and installed it on my phone(its backing up right now) so I will see if it works. I originally bought this version and wasn't able to go back to it.

So after Jailbreaking using redsn0w .9.2 instead of the beta this time I hope that my mobile safari won't keep stopping causing me to restart, which is annoying. haven't tried it out yet.

I also am using the trial of mywi, I am liking it so far

So thats where I am at.

Thank you "pcs are junk" you were a great guide.

PS also another note. When i started out i had carrier file 6.0, but after my recent sync i have carrier file 5.5. Interesting. I don't know if it will effect me.
