Ok so you will all tell me to stop messing about with old tech, but I like to tinker around.

So to anyone who might be interested or be able to offer advice please read on.

I have a mid 2007 20" imac but have read a guide to install sierra.
However my 2GHz is not supported need the 2.4GHz or 2.8GHz extreme.

Can anyone tell me what socket the imac uses?
I found a few CPUs online/ebay/etc.

I would like to swap the cpu as they are cheap.
I will be fitting more ram to max out at 6GB and a 120GB SSD too.

I love this imac and with these mods should last me a few more years until I can afford a new imac.

So any help is much appreciated.

Thanks, I just found an ifixit thread where the x7900 works great so added one to ebay watch list at £40 so once get paid gonna order it.

I seen the 2.6 as well but seen few saying the cooler is fine with the extreme.
Cooler capable of 45watts and the 2.0GHz is 35watta and the extreme is 44watts.

Also going add SSD so less heat within case (hopefully).

From what I read it a worthwhile upgrade.
It will make it last longer plus I like to tinker with machines to improve them.

wish you much success with your efforts.

wondering about the car in your profile. when I first saw it, I flashed back to a past vehicle of mine,
Volvo 164e.jpg

but that is not what you have there.

I have a 2008 iMac with
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
& 4gb ram. It has El Capitan on it but cannot be upgraded to Sierra.

you can upgrade to sierra with a 2.4GHz.

there is a hack!
Also will take 6GB ram, 2+4 :)

Sadly my avatar is not a volvo (i love volvo)
It is a 1972 austin 1300 vanden plas pricess.

[doublepost=1476130844][/doublepost]If you have the 2.4GHz or upgrade to 2.8GHz then can fool installer into thinking you have a 2009 imac 20"

see this link for installing sierra on 2009 imac
