Want to update to 3.1 from Jailbreak. Can I just update or do I need to restore?

Title says it all.

I currently have my 3gs jailbroken using redsn0w on version 3.0.1. Can I simply update to 3.1? Or do I need to restore to factory and then update?

Just update through iTunes.

if you have the battery % indicator or changed the carrier name, they will still be altered if you restore froma backup.

So turn them off before you unjailbreak or set up as a new phone

You have to do a DFU Restore to get rid of them.
