I want to upgrad quad 2.66 nehalem to something-6core so I have some question.

1.) Is it run hotter? (2.66x4@45nm vs 3.33x6@32nm)
2.) If i use core i7 9xx instead xeon. Are my pro get stability issue?
3.) I got ~$300 deal on x5670 with water damage, (it live under the water for ~15 days "Thailand flooding crisis") but can work properly. Are my pro get damage when using this proc.
4.) if you were me what you choose? W3680@$660+ i7-970@$450 or water-damage-but-still-working w5670@$300

Thanks.

What is your reason for upgrading? Are you using apps that can use multiple cores?

1. I don't know but I suspect not
2. You can't use a core i7, its not compatible
3. CPU's are solid state, I don't see how 'water damage' is possible unless it was submerged in salt water, in which case I would not use it at all.
4. I would use the W3680

Just be careful installing CPU's in a 4.1 Mac Pro. Have read the CPUs Apple used are 2mm shorter than standard and tightening down can shatter the daughter board. Most recommendations are to use processors from another 4.1.

On a single CPU Mac Pro 4.1 it is very easy, as it uses same processors with heatsinks(lids) in a latched tray. The lidless processors are for the Dual CPU Mac Pro 4.1 but it is easy as well, just done it yesterday.

Go ahead and upgrade your processor, it is a 30 minutes job.

First things. I want to thanks your all. (everybody in this threads)

1.) This is the thing i fear most for being Hex!! (today my pro runs 99c when full throttle and Ambient = 38c++. Very hot in Thailand)
2.) From what i know there're some guy in MR use i7-795 in his pro. But i found he has some stability problem so i want to hear this problem still there or not?
3.) So it means i can use that chip right?
