I have an unlocked iPhone using the 2.1 firmware. I jailbroke/unlocked it using pwnage tool a while ago, then I upgraded to 2.1 on itunes which kept the unlock but lost the jailbreak.

Now I want to upgrade to 3.0 firmware with the unlock. I've done some research and it seems like I just need to use pwnage tool to create a custom IPSW for 3.0 and then alt+restore it onto my phone.

I just want to make sure that is correct.

Do I need to enter DFU mode, or do I not have to worry about that?
I know 3.1.2 was just released but I believe that the devteam's website said that you have to have a phone a 3.0 before going to 3.1.2 with the unlock...is that correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Build the custom firmware and Alt+Restore in iTunes. I never had to enter DFU mode to do so. But if you have any issues, then do so.

Ok cool, I'm building the custom firmware using pwnage tool right now and then I'll fire up iTunes and alt+restore it.

I have the custom 2.1 firmware saved still so if anything goes wrong I can downgrade back to that right?

Cool, I just updated to 3.0. I've got Cydia and Icy and an icon that is gray and says "paused"...

any idea what that is?
