So basically I have come to a cure. Not just a macbook air cure, but a cure in general. I have an iMac, a BlackBook, and a MacBook Air and as you know if you watch over 5 minutes of YouTube...you're fans are going to be going full blast. The other night I was cruising around on MR and I remembered reading about Flash 10 that was in Beta few months ago. I went to Adobe Labs and to my surprise Flash 10 is not in beta anymore. I quickly downloaded and installed the newest version of Adobe Flash 10 and went to bed, not thinking anything of it. Tonight I went to youtube on my MBA to watch some top videos and some political recaps. I watched 5 videos of the NBA-recaps, and Obama's 17.00 min speech with my fans not going above 2500rpm. My CPU Temp peaked at 57 for a few minutes, but went back down to a nice cool 52 degrees. Mind you i'm on a MBA v1. I'm going to test it on my BlackBook later tonight...but let's just hope this is the real thing.

Test it out and see if you get the same results.

I installed it yesterday. I didn't have time to run any youtube videos for more than a few seconds (was on my way out), but I noticed the CPU bars were a lot lower than normal. I will watch this development with interest! :)

My MacBook hasn't broken about 2,500 RPM when watching videos on Hulu. Now that I think about it that's an improvement. I've had Flash 10 for some time but I haven't been on Hulu in awhile.

WOW, thanks. Just loaded Flash10 onto my G1 Air and it has made a noticeable difference to all web surfing temps/fans not just youtube.

That's terrific.

A word of warning though: I thought I read on some other thread that Flash 10 was not working with a number of sites; to the point where people were people were actively trying to de-install it. It also seemed difficult to de-install.

I'm sure in a bit it will be a perfect solution but there may be some short run issues.

Thank you !

If this works like I think it does it's going to solve all sorts of serious overheating issues with laptops in general.

And certainly this AIR specifically :)

For me it didn't work with the Washington Post crossword page. Someone else said Citibank didn't work. I successfully downgraded by deleting and installing the 10.5.5 combo update.

I believe it's a coding error where the sites are checking the version number of the flash player, expecting a single digit number at the start and are confused by the two digit number-- a version check spits out "NaN" which (I've recently learned" means "not a number".

Thanks for the heads up on the 10.5.5 combo, wordmunger. i was able to downgrade with your method.

That's nice, but this is about a MacBook Air. ;)

Oh thanks. Will install on a test partition then.

That's nice, but this is about a MacBook Air. ;)

Actually the problem happens on all MB, MBA, and MBP (due to inefficient Adobe flash player). Even MBP fans spin when using older versions of Adobe Flash player.

Thanks for the tip!

Anyone know if the fans blow with silverlight?

I am going to be using my air to watch stuff on Netflix streaming unless the fans blow harder then Bruce Willing in "striking distance"...:D

What are you guys talking about? I just installed Flash 10, watching youtube and my fan is on full blast and CPU is at 72 Celsius just like normal.

It also works a lot better on old G4's which used to be marginal with Flash! I'd been following the beta for a while.. basically Adobe finally took the effort to find the bottleneck in Mac performance.

That said, I still can't full-screen some Hulu videos without serious choppiness on my MBA.

Ditto. CPU usage hovers around 30-40%. This is on a MB 2.16GHz with the Intel GMA950. Temperatures rise to the mid 60Cs and the fan is on 4500rpm, so quite warm and noisy. Perhaps the nVidia 9400 is taking some of the heat away rather than Adobe's coding.

I get lower temps on an MSI Wind running OSX, though. Considering the hardware is pretty much the same as in my MB with a more cramped interior, I think there must be some hardware issues here.

The same hardware as your macbook? The MSI Wind has a single core Atom processor that has a maximum TDP of 2.5W. The Macbook has a double core processor that (depending on your exact macbook model) has a TDP of around 35W, fourteen times that of the Wind.

I recently switched from a Macbook Pro (Unibody) to the Macbook Air (1.8), hoping I can get similar performance with less weight. But even after installing the latest Adobe Flash 10, my system hits 62 degrees celsius with the fan at 6200rpm from just a single youtube playing after 3mins. Its winter where I live, and the laptop is sitting flat on my desk, so, is there something wrong with my machine? Or is the Air still having problem with heat and youtube?

Im using the latest Macbook Air, with the 1.8 Core2Duo and 128GB SSD. I just need to confirm if this is normal, cos if its not, then I need to get it replaced within the replacement period.

So, are u all having no problem with heat and youtube anymore?
