Hello everyone,
Im looking to buy a macbook pro in the next week or so, the yellowing screen issue is a concern of mine... Im planning on customizing the hard-drive. The question is, if I do customize my notebook and get a defective yellow screen I can return for an entirely new machine - or am I stuck with it for repairs.

-I really dont want to have to deal with repairs from day 1, I'd like to be able to return it if its defective.

Anyone with information/experience regarding this issue will be extremely helpful
I appreciate it
Thanks everyone
Take cares :)

I am not sure, but I am planning on buying my first MBP (and first Mac) within in the next few days. I'm going to up the HD a bit, and I'm just hoping for the best when it comes to yellowing screens and whatever else. I would hope that it won't be a problem if you do end up with a defective screen.

Goodluck on purchasing your MBP!

Hey you guys I'm 99% sure (check with others or the apple store if you don't trust me) that ram and HD upgrades are the only upgrades you can do without voiding your warranty:D

Hey guys-
I would consider getting a refurbed model on Apple's Special Deals page. I just got a 17'' with a bumped up HD (7200 rpm) and it's perfect. All refurbs are tested before going out, so they'd notice the yellow screen (or it was a yellow screen and now fixed). I saved nearly $500 because it was a refurb. And- it was current model and all.
Good luck!

I have yet to take a look at the refurbished MBP's...I'll go do that now, thanks for the idea. Do Apple stores sell refurbished models as well?

I just looked at Apple.com and they don't have any 15" MBP's listed...arrrg..so much for that
I get a student discount anyways..works for me.

Im not looking for a refurb, a new machine, i just wish someone would tell me if I customize it and if I get a defective screen- can I return it and get another or am I stuck with repairs, it seems like no one can answer my question :(

If they do the customization, they should have no problem with it (I would think)

They won't customize if you buy in person at an Apple store?

Apple's online store policy on CTO machines is no returns for any reason except DOA. Not sure if they would classify a yellow screen as DOA, but I sincerely doubt it---especially since it doesn't impede the actual function of the machine.

With all due respect, this type of thing is exactly why I abandoned the MacBook Pro (after 5 bad ones out of a total of 6 machines) for now. Seems to me like just good sense that a $2K-$3K computer purchase should never, ever be accompanied by uncertainty as to the quality of the product. If you can't buy with confidence for that kind of money, something is seriously wrong somewhere. And while we can argue that forums like this one will always represent a biased sample for defect rates, when even ONE customer (such as myself) has to go through SIX $2000-$3000 laptops in order to get just ONE laptop without serious issues, something is wrong with the product line. (And I'm definitely not the only one that has been through this sort of experience with MacBook Pros.) I bought a regular MacBook, no problems whatsoever, and I've slept much better ever since.

Didn't mean to jack the thread BTW, but the point is that if you're set on buying a MBP and worried from the start about being able to return it in the event of defects (which are more likely with this particular product than they should be), it might be best to avoid a custom configuration.

yeah I totally understand where your coming from... Its a lot of money to be dropping a product which is not at the peak of high quality--- but based on what Ive been reading on the boards some o/ the people with customizable machines were able to return as yellow screens were a defect and ordered another machine all together.

That's good news. It means that Apple acknowledges this as a problem, even if only internally. My own bad luck with MacBook Pros has sort of scared me off of ordering any CTO from Apple, but hopefully your mileage will vary. Maybe you could chat with a sales assistant online and specifically ask them what they would do about a CTO machine with the yellow screen defect.
