I may have put this thread elsewhere by mistake, but this maybe the best place. Sorry to mods if in error...

Years ago, when one had a, shush... pc, one had combat flight simulator.

Gave all that up, moved over to Medal of Honor on the Mac, but that fizzled out with an upgrade (big regret) to Lion or SnowDog or whatever it was called.

I've got 10.7.5 now, suppose that's a Leopard of some kind, not that I care.

What I want is a flight sim where I can also go online and shoot other people out of the sky if I get the (slim) chance. You know the kind of thing... Spitfires vs 109's over the cliffs of Dover sort of thing, shooting up tanks in the Picardy countryside...

What do you recommend? What's available these days? Bear in mind I may need a hardware upgrade I guess.

Sky Gamblers - Storm Raiders (most popular flight sim game on Mac App Store). And probably one of the MOST downloaded games on the entire Mac App Store (statistically based on the HUNDREDS of people that Rated it and reviewed it on the Mac App Store alone).

Is it a "gamey" flight sim? Yes. Gameplay and fast paced adrenalin action is emphasized more than physics realism. But tons of players are playing it multi-player every day. And at a price of $4.99…. won't lose much money if you don't like it.

The word is "arcade" or "arcadey" :)

Its a good choice if on a mac and if playing offline its totally free. How about P40s vs Zeros over some islands.;)

I played this in the late 90's to early oughts and enjoyed before I got hooked on Aces High. I run a late 13, 13"macbook retina now and was wondering if this game would make this machine sound like a diving Stuka due to fan noise? If not, or not too much, I'd latch it to a big monitor and a j/s and give it a go again.

The War Thunder sim looks compelling but I see it isn't OSX ready yet.

Diving Stuka maybe maybe not but the sound of the engine your flying will drown it out, best thing to do is try it and see how it works. I like those warbirds from WW2 and it plays nice with OSX.

War thunder is what you want.
There is an osx beta going on now. Actually has been for awhile, it was just kind of hidden.
Start here for install instrucitons.

It has 3 levels of play. Arcade, Realistic and Sim. Up to you what you want out of it. Tanks are coming soon too.

Look me up when you get there.

I no longer have the patience for game betas, but War Thunder sure looks nice from the in-game trailers. And the developers are promising Mac-to-PC version cross-platform online play? Putting this on my Watch List! Hopefully a polished release comes out in the next few months.

Its fairly polished now. There are the gripes about Flight Models and Damage Models on some planes, the ranking system is going through some changes, but for the most part it has been flawless for me. THe WT world is already filled with Mac and PC pilots flying right along side of each other from all over the world.

Please tell me this won't be some kind of monthly subscription-paid online flight sim. Do you know how they will price the game?

Its free with a but. Its free as long as you don't get in a hurry. You start off with there money system called lions. Each plane cost lions and you win lions when you do missions and shoot down planes and ground targets. But if you want you can pay money to get more lions. Me, I'm happy to grind to a new plane the old fashion way. I earn it and keep my money in my own pocket.

Search there forum to get feel for it. Its kind of like real racing 3. As you win races you get money to buy new cars. Same kind of thing. ONly you can also upgrade motors, guns, radiators, gunners and ground crew.

There forum here
Read up on it before you commit, but its free so no big loss. The more mac users over there the better.
