I was looking at NOVA and Need for Speed on the iPad and thinking what terrible choices of games to demo on the device - and wondered which games would be best for a tablet? Then I though.. RTS.

I think my one wish for a game to be ported to the iPad is either WarCraft 3 or StarCraft. If you don't what they are they are basically 2 of the greatest RTSs of all time, and lend themselves perfectly already to touch screen controls. The developer, Blizzard, are long time fans of Apple and release their titles on Mac and PC simultaneously.

A few added multitouch gestures for ease of use and you have yourself as killer as an app could possibly be for the new iPad.

Anyone know the number for Blizz HQ? Gotta make this happen..

I don't think I could play WC3 like that after watching that video. Too inaccurate. I'm too pro for that :p

Nah but sure, to fool around and have a cool way to show off to play sure... but to play a serious game I would find myself getting extremely frustrated. At this point nothing beats the keyboard and mouse for RTS games. (this is more so for WC3 where you need more micro vs. SC where macro is more important and is more practical on multitouch. Selecting a unit and moving it back, casting a spell on a unit, etc would be quite tedious on a touch screen)

I agree. There is no way you could enjoy the game and have same efficiency with touch as you have with mouse and keyboard. I often build units etc. during battle as i have the buildings on hot keys etc. and that would be almost impossible with touch screen. A player no matter how skilled playing on touchscreen would be always beaten by a guy 2-3 skill levels below him.

As mentioned, it would be fun to show it to your friend etc. but not serious for a game. :)

Not for a tournament game maybe but you could enjoy the single player campaign and some laid back multiplayer on a touchscreen easily.

Still, the chances of Blizzard porting this are effectively zero..

Given Blizzard's speed of development and getting games to market, I would be by the time WarCraft for the iPad is ready, the iPad will look more like what Tom Cruise manipulates in "Minority Report", and Blizzard would have to start over again.

I think an hack'n'slash would be great on iPad, something like Diablo.

In fact I would like to make one myself. :D

Good Turn Based Strategy and Real-Time Strategy games is definitely something the iPad would be able to pull off convincingly.

I like the idea of playing Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo on this device.

Also games like Civilization, Settlers of Catan, The Settlers, Age of Empire, Mega-Lo-Mania and roleplaying games (like Baldur's Gate and Final Fantasy) would be outstanding candidates.

I really wish Wil Wright was still in charge of the SimCity franchise. SimCity iPad would be amazing.

The original Starcraft was developed to work on 1024 x 768 resolution.... just sayin'.

I think some modifications would help to make it more touch-screen friendly, like little programmable buttons/tabs on the side of the screen for things that people do via hotkeys on a traditional keyboard... maybe add some various gestures for power users. I think it could be amazing.

What I'd really like to see is an RTS game completely re-imagined for the iPad... one that's native to it, not just a port.

Also, Blizzard is great at what they do, but they are mega-slow getting things actually released - partly due to their extensive testing, and partly due to... who knows what. Don't expect an iPad game from them anytime this decade ;-).

I think RTS games would be great on the iPad. Has anyone tried Red Alert on it yet? The whole C&C franchise was hugely popular back in my college days; bit of nostalgia for me. :)

Amazing that I was thinking about the exact same games. I would love to see these make a comeback of sorts for the iPad. They would be perfect for this platform. Here's hoping. :D

yeah agreeing with the above I'm not sure you'd see competition gaming on an iPad version of starcraft - but I certainly think you could build a compelling singleplayer experience for it, with a bit of appropriate interface modification.

Would take some careful thought though. We've already seen RTS games for the iPhone and they are ok, but that's about all frankly. I'm sure it could be done better. Somehow.

Hey you know if we can get a whole lot of people E-mailing and call Blizzard. WE just maybe be-able to get SC1 & WC3 for Ipad :D

I've been eyeing it for a while now. If I had the time to get into it, I'd probably already have it. But I've been holding off. Wokuld love to get some opinions (apart from the app comments).

All for SC on the iPad.

Side Note: I've been playing the SCII beta and totally forgot how those cutting edge 1998 graphics looked.

Heroes of Might and Magic III on iPad would do me fine. And being that it's turn based it wouldn't matter about accuracy so much as you can always click again if miss...

Yes PC RTS games would amazing on the iPad. Just imagine Red Alert 2. The RA game that's on the app store right now sucks compared to RA2.
