I have recently starting playing W3 on my 24" iMac (I used Boot Camp until the 1.21 patch) and I have been experiencing lag spikes in the middle of DOTA games that is causing me to drop from the game.

I have never experienced lag spikes via Boot Camp (or my previous PC) and I am able to Apple-M out of the game and surf the net just fine, but I'm lagging out of games.

Anyone else experience and fix this?
Thanks.

Well, I know on my old PC it happens, but never to the point where I drop off a server

And it wasn't that random either, it would be on large maps with lots of units on screen...so...no I can't say I've had this problem...

It must be with your software, whether it be your OS or drivers or maybe something is glitchy with some of the copied data for the game, because the specs for your hardware are far superior to my old PC and as I said, it didn't have this problem...

try re-installing the game and see how that works and report back, change one thing at a time for a trial and error way of figuring it out.

I personally think it was the install, because W3 is mac compatible, so it can't really be the OS giving you a hard time.

Nothing to do with graphics or even your iMac probably. If you drop from games, then your firewall more than likely is not setup correctly.

If you have wireless, you would need to setup the wireless router, for ports 6112-6119 for your iMac. If you have not a clue what all this means. Tell me your make and model of your modem and Router.

Another possible cause for dropping, is if the host is using LC. This will put more strain on your connection, and if your internet connection is not the best, you might drop. All to do with packets. Also, if you are on a network, someone uploading a file (say photos to facebook) can seriously hamper your connection, loosing your connection to the host.

I experience serious spikes when the host is running windows vista. I get spikes every 5-10 mins which last approx. for 30-40 secs (i can do this once per game, the second time ppl usually kick me as lamer/noob/whatever) So i keep asking the hosts i play with if they run on vista or not.

Are you using a wired or wireless connection?

As stated previously, your networking hardware can play a part. See if you can find the makes and models of them.
