One of the cool things about the 3.0 Betas was that if you upgraded (rather than restore) on a 2G unlocked iPhone, it would remain unlocked to any carrier (obviously, the jailbreak would disappear).

Unfortunately, it seems that Apple have fixed that little loophole because when I upgraded a 2G from Beta 5 to GM, the carrier lock returned :(

A DFU back to 2.2.1 and QuickPWN got me an unlocked phone again, but for the moment, it seems to be one or the other: Unlocked or 3.0

My 2g phone was re-locked for every beta upgrade, but I've seen several posts indicating that it worked for other people. I've also seen some posts indicating that people were able to upgrade from an unlocked phone to the 3.0 GM and retain their lock. Sounds like if we identify what we're doing differently, then we can unlock a pre-GM version and upgrade to retain the lock.

Here's the details of what I did, that did NOT work
Unlocked 3.0b5 with hacked QuickPWN from a Windows machine and iTunes 8.2 beta. I did NOT jailbreak, only unlock. I did this with the SIM installed.

I upgraded to 3.0GM using iTunes 8.2b10 from a Mac on 10.5.7 with the SIM removed. I tried to unplug the USB cable before the iPhone rebooted so that iTunes wouldn't invalidate the lock. Maybe that was the mistake?

Junkmeh, can you share the method you used for your unlock, and the conditions of your upgrade? If you are specific enough, hopefully I can replicate what you did exactly :)

Thanks
