iPhone Warning - battery/power button repair will upgrade you to io8

Just spoke with Apple because my old iPhone5 was qualified for battery repair, as well as the power button issue. They confirmed that they WILL upgrade you to ios8 if they service it.

Guess I'll just keep the 5 as is and use its tweaks until someone cracks ios8

My power button only works when I press it on the left half, the right half of the power button when pressed doesn't do anything.

Yep, thats what I had but its degraded over time to doing nada now.

Battery is very flaky, will jump from 50% to 2% and then back up if I plug it in.

I wasn't aware that would be 'upgraded', just that you had to have a clean iOS install of the latest sub-release. I was hoping since 7.1.2 was still being signed that they'd keep it at 7.1.2.

Very strange, it further proves that Apple must remotely damage our phones to push us to the new devices.

Did you by chance drop your phone a lot? I notice the corner by the button/camera on my iphone 5 has a small dent and scratch but it doesn't look like it would be enough to displace the power button. Anyway I though that's why my power button didn't work, didn't know it was a common thing.

Sorry, wrong choice of words. I meant what you just said. The condition is that the device be running the latest release (as you said).

I used the word upgraded because at the time the warranties appeared I was jailbroken on iOS 6.1 and meeting this warranty condition would have required an upgrade for me.

No drops, no scratches, its flawless. Its stopped working when I upgraded to iOS7 which clearly indicates that a firmware change effected things. I personally believe the buttons had a defect that wasn't exposed until iOS7 exposed it and that's why they're repairing them. As for why mine has gotten worse over time, honestly don't know.

I added an activator gesture to swipe up from the bottom left side to turn off the screen, and a triple finger tap to take a screen shot.

Got so used to doing that I keep forgetting it won't work on my iPhone6!

Well I don't know about the justification of repairs but just within the past month there's a lot of rumors, speculation, and evidence found of iphones acting strange/going "haywire".

For example my brothers stock ios6 iphone 4 (not iPhone 4s mind you) started "overheating" out of no where. It literally got so hot the iphone shut down and said "please wait until your device has cooled down before using". The battery went from 100% to 0% in 57 minutes. You could literally watch the battery % numbers change almost every minute. It did this for about 6-7 days prior to last night.

Now just as of last night the phone stopped doing it, it's running back at standard operating procedure. It could be pure coincidence but with my tin foil hat equipped I believe apple has a type of "kill switch" that they send on some devices to entice users to upgrade. (Or in your case, repair)

Like I said, could be pure coincidence of the iphone 6 release, but a lot of users report the same, and there's even articles online reporting this type of behavior.
