WARNING: iOS 6 Auto OTA Update to iOS 7

For those who are still on iOS 6 in here and don't want to update to iOS 7, DO NOT charge your iDevices with the WiFi connected!

(Read it again, you will forget and the same applies to me too.)

When this happens, iOS will react like backing up, restoring and downloading from iCloud. It will trigger iOS6 to download the entire 782 MB of iOS 7 OTA and will prompt you to install the update after you've unlocked your device. You can reject it, but days you haven't had your coffee you might hit "install" by accident. Also the first time you go into your settings app, it takes you to the install page right away.

Took me awhile to figure out what was going with the GF's IP4S and why she got notification alerts & badges. Meanwhile I got nothing on my IP5.


Fortunately I've made a fresh, clean and a new user back up for all my iDevices. I can now erase and resync that back up. Just in case, God forbid something happens and I can jump right back as a fresh device without setting everything up again. Something like a ghost imaging for all the Window users and Time Machine Back Up or Carbon Copy Cloner for OSX.

The worst you will have is the latest OS. Those refusing to upgrade are only going to face further problems when they miss updates further down the line. If you don't upgrade then you can't criticise support, you won't have a leg to stand on as far as I am concerned.

It's not a question of never updating...
It's simply choosing to not update right now- on 7.0

Perhaps 7.1, or whatever incarnation improves/fixes the current issues (especially so for the iPad).
 
I use to laugh at ppl who stated they've "accidentally" updated and thought it was impossible. After my findings, this can happen to anyone who had a rough night and this would start their day off on as "its one of those days!"
 
I've had my iPad WiFi on a while charging and no OTA update has downloaded. One interesting thing I did was to go to "check for updates" and acknowledged iOS 7 was available and cancelled out. It hasn't attempted an OTA download.

Every iOS upgrade i've done requires a password. I don't understand how someone can accidentally upgrade ?
 
Indeed once you've reject the install, it won't proceed with nagging you again about the update, but the badge will be sitting on the corner of the settings app forever.

I don't even have the badge. I guess I acknowledged it before it went checking for the update. You could do a complete reset and erase and afterwards go out and acknowledge the OTA update.
 
It can happen

I went to update my wife's iPad (she only uses it every few days) and it had already updated to iOS7 and all the apps were updated. It was fine since I had planned on updating it anyway but I was surprised as it had just been sitting unplugged but on WiFi for several days. There was no welcome screen, just an updated iPad. Thought I was crazy until I saw this post.
 
Yes, don't charge with wifi on; live with this really annoying inconvenience just cos you don't like something far less annoying in iOS 7.

That could be possible, all the iDevices in my house hold had been through all the iOS 7 Beta stages, GM and Public Builds. I assume they already have all the acknowledge agreements for iOS 7 on record for us.

Less annoying than an iPad 4 that runs like an iPad? Not a chance. iOS7 hasn't been optimised to the iPad yet, it's as simple as that.

If you don't believe me, upgrade your iPad, then go change the wallpaper, see what happens.

I've upgraded my iPad and as you mentioned the only problem I have is changing the wallpaper. This certaniley doesn't affect the functionality or my experience of using the iPad.

That's possible if you did not perform a full reset and erase. I watch my disk space for any unusual changes. It hasn't budged one MB.
 
Booth my iphone and my ipad are on 6.1.3 and what I did is pretty simple: I installed heavy games on my idevices so that they have at least 2.8gb or 3.2 on ipad. To download the OTA, it requires 2.9 gb free space or even more on newer devices and now I can use wifi all the time with no OTA files filling my idevices space
 
This happened to both our iPad's (a 2 and 3) when they were plugged to to charge them. We leave WiFi on all the time. Both of them downloaded the update but did not automatically install.

It freaked me out and I looked for a setting on them that would allow the download but could not find one.

I was going to update mine anyway but did it through iTunes as a new device.

So now my wife's iPad has the download taking up space but it's not installed. It pissed me off since as far as I'm concerned Apple pushed the download without our consent. I would not be surprised if Apple includes all the "pushed" downloads in the stats when they report the number of downloads.

On the other hand, my iPhone 4S did not get the download pushed to it when I put it on the charger or connected it to the computer and I'm leaving it at 6.1.3 until more bugs get fixed.

Fragmentation is something Apple is not interested in. All apps will be iOS 7 optimized in the next few months....auto-update is the best thing they could possibly do! A 100% adoption rate is the best thing that can happen for the OS since it will make devs want to update using new APIs since they won't have any fragmented users.

The above would be true if the iPad 1 could support iOS 7. It is a numbers game for Apple to show their devs they don't want fragmentation but with legacy devices you will always have product and OS fragmentation. :p

I say let users decide if they want to upgrade. Not all users have a vested interest in the iOS ecosystem. Bugs aside I don't like the Flat look on any OS.

True, but that's because iPad 1 was a beta device and should have never been released.

The iPad was world class when it was released. Technology improves and so does the iPad and iPhone. The thing is if you don't want fragmentation at least Amazon does it right by forcing an OS update on all it's devices regardless of age.
