May be common sense to some but do a sync before trying to apply the update. I hadn't synced mine in a week and lost a bunch of stuff because the update forced a total restore due to the custom ringtones I installed.

Weird that I got NONE of my SMS messages back on restore :(

I hadn't sycn'd mine in days and it synced it first and then downloaded and installed the updated. Perhaps your "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" option is not checked.

i synced before the update to make sure everything got saved. I had to do a restore since i used jailbreak and iphoneinterface to install ringtones. everything came back fine after the update EXCEPT my camera roll was gone.

so i would also advise people to save your camera roll!

i thought itunes kept a backup on my computer but i couldnt find one. does anyone know where it might be?

I didnt lose anything after the update... all my SMS, emails, settings, etc are all same as before. I did notice that it wouldnt do the update thro my phone dock w/ the :apple: BT headset... had to use the original iPhone dock... but I'm not sure there is any correlation to be drawn from that. Wish I could tell you guys why... just applied the update and it restarted with no probs.

I doubt it, most likelly they did it just for the security issues.
I dont think they really care about people moddin their phones.
Probably the percentage of people using hack tools to modify their phone is very low.

And does anyone think this was a warning shot from Apple?

Thanks for the reminder, had to restore since used ifuntastic

ive done a couple of restores, due to messing with my phone and hacking through it, but after everytime i restore it, i lose all my text messages and some contact editation (is that a word). how do i back these up?

I did a sync before restore/update and than after that got done, instead of setting up a new account in itunes again I just had it restore from the previous one I had setup. All text messages came back but not email or wifi settings.

i really hope not. i really like my mods i did to my iphone, i hope i wont have to do them everytime there is an update. And i hope apple wont eventually brick the iphones that have been hacked, nah they wouldnt...

Yeah, I don't think Apple is like Sony with the PSP. Sony just keeps churning out updates to block the exploits in running homebrew software.

Perhaps I am lucky, but I did not lose anything with the update. However, now when I connect the iPhone to my (windows) computer, it complains that Outlook is not the default mail program. Actually it complains twice. In fact, Outlook is NOT my default mail program, nor do I want it to be. Just another annoyance to live with, I guess.

I didn't sync before the update and I didn't have a modded phone and I didn't have sync when iPhone is connected checked either.

I didn't lose a thing after the update, all contacts, SMS, notes and everything that was there before the update was there after and it never did a restore.
