I have an iPad Air 2 running iOS 11.

I got a pop up message while using Safari that said "warningvirusalertcallapple" and gave me the option to tap Cancel or Call.

I couldn't figure out how to close out the browser tab, so like an idiot, I hit Cancel.

I cleared my history and website data as was recommended on the Apple forums, but I'm wondering if I put myself into any danger by tapping Cancel.

Should I be worried that I now have a virus as a result of tapping on it?

Your iPad is fine. There's nothing that can be downloaded via a browser on iOS that could infect your device. Clicking cancel was the correct choice.

Thanks. I was worried it was one of those ads that are disguised to make you think you are clicking Cancel to safely close it out, when in fact it's dangerous no matter what you click.

I accidentally pressed the Call button once and then my phone wouldn’t do anything after that with because the message froze on my screen hovering constantly and not letting me do anything. I eventually did a hard restart. Once it restarted, I disconnected all WiFi and cellular and reopened the browser (it was Firefox), and this time the page didn’t load which didn’t lead to the message popping up. So I closed that page tab and deleted that link from my history.

My questions are:
1) Is my phone compromised?
2) Can they steal any data or info off my phone?
3) Is the app (Firefox) compromised?
4) If so what should I do?

I just read a bbc article were we are screwed.
But in this case, these hackers from India just want $149 to unlock PCS, NOT IPADS.
My family member got trapped using their dell on explorer and a popular cooking recipe website was hacked last October, froze the ps, so they called the 1888# and a Hindi voice wanted a credit card number.

Just to add to all the good advice; whenever I come across this issue, I go to Settings - Safari - Advanced and toggle JavaScript off. I then reopen Safari and close the offending window and clear the history, etc. Finally, I return to the same Safari settings section and toggle JavaScript back on.

This method isn’t more effective than any other, but allows you to quickly regain control of your Safari app.
