Yep, it happened. Washed my clothes on Saturday and when I took out the wash, noticed I had my shuffle and headset by Scorche (both in the baggie, which was NOT wasterproof...) in my pants pocket....

Hope runs eternal. I immediately bagged both of them in a ziploc bag with rice and waited 2 days....

Tested headset, it works. mic is a bit sloppy but clear enough. Then the real test. Plugged the iPod into the charge plug that I have for my iPad. I got an amber light!! So I fully charged it and with bated breath tested it... it works!!

I told this to a coworker of mine who told me he has washed his 3x now LOL! I asked if he did anything special to dry it and no, said he just let it to dry out on its own....

Not sure how much I killed the life of the product but I have to admit I am really pleased it works ... so far!

It didn't bleed onto your whites, did it?

Seriously, I'm glad you resurrected it.

Haha! No I do almost all of my washes in cold.

I would have been sad if it didn't work. I had waited like 6 months before deciding to buy one. I know it is not really updated, but what I like about the shuffle line is when I am at the gym on the treadmill. I don't have to look down, flick, touch, and replace the device from where I took it like I would if it were a Nano.

So glad to know that the trick works. Have watched countless roommates drop iPhones and other i-Devices in the toilet, sink, etc...will remember to have rice on hand at all times.

Dropped my own headphones in a cup of coffee once...think coffee is as innocent as soap + water?:p

I'm not sure why people always talk about rice. It's only going to help the places it touches. Certainly not the circuit board inside a case of aluminum.

Winter is a good time to make this mistake. Dryer air in many places dries things out faster.

I spilled mustard on my phone this weekend. Luckily not really near a seam or orifice.

Not necessarily. If you place it in a ziploc bag as the OP stated, there would at least in theory be a benefit as the rice draws moisture from the air. In an airtight situation this would likely create an effect where water in the device evaporates more quickly replacing the absent moisture held by the rice. It's similar to the reason why clothes dry more slowly in a humid environment.

Grains of rice are popularly added to salt shakers to stop the salt from clumping, so its an effect that has been known about for long before the iPhone came into existence.
