Starting a new thread as this was mentioned in the 5700XT thread but I don’t think it’s related to those graphics (I have the 5500XT). It may even be a Catalina thing.
The issue: after waking the display, colours appear washed out and the contrast is diminished, like a faint white overlay has been applied over the screen or the shadows have been pushed. I initially thought the issue resolved itself after a few seconds but now I actually think it remains and my eyes just get used to it. The issue can be resolved by toggling certain display settings like True tone or switching display profiles then switching back.
I’ve been able to replicate it pretty consistently with the following steps.
Do this a few times if you don’t see a change the first time. It should look pretty obvious.
Lock the screen (Apple menu > Lock screen or Command + Control + Q)
Note the contrast and colours of the password screen
Choose “Cancel” to sleep the display
Wait 3–5 seconds
Wake the display
Note the colours and contrast – they should be washed out
Type the password to log in
Open the Displays preference pane
Toggle True Tone (off then on, or on then off) a few times
The contrast and colours should snap back to richer/more normal, independently of the colour temperature change from True Tone, which is gradual and slower
Lock the screen again and repeat the steps again to confirm
Anybody else getting this?
I’d suspect that True Tone was the culprit – but toggling display profiles instead also fixes it.
